AtaiBeckley (搜索) Inc. is working with financial advisers to explore strategic options for its flagship psychedelic drug candidate BPL-003, a nasal spray for treatment of severe depression (搜索) that is entering phase 3 clinical trials. The company is seeking $2 billion or more from a potential sale or partnership deal, according to people familiar with the matter.
The firm has selected Jefferies Financial Group (搜索) Inc. and JPMorgan Chase (搜索) & Co. to lead discussions with other pharmaceutical companies under a co-commercialization agreement structure. The strategic review comes as psychedelic therapies gain momentum in the mental health treatment landscape.
Deutsche Bank Projects Significant Market Opportunity
Deutsche Bank (搜索) recently initiated coverage on AtaiBeckley (搜索) with a buy rating and a $12 price target, representing a potential gain of more than 250% from recent trading levels. The investment bank believes the company is well-positioned to capitalize on what it calls the "Psychedelic Renaissance."
"Several psychedelic companies have emerged as bona fide drug developers, attracting attention from healthcare/biotech investors who usually invest in conventional therapeutics," wrote Deutsche Bank (搜索) analyst David Hoang. "We count ATAI among these trailblazers, and believe it will become a leader in the nascent field of psychedelic medicine for mental health conditions."
Pipeline and Sales Projections
AtaiBeckley (搜索) has developed a portfolio of psychedelic compounds targeting treatment-resistant depression (搜索). Beyond BPL-003, the company is advancing VLS-01, a buccal tryptamine derivative, and EMP-01, an oral MDMA derivative for seasonal affective disorder (搜索).
Hoang used Johnson & Johnson's Spravato, an intranasal ketamine derivative approved for treatment-resistant depression (搜索) in 2019, as a benchmark for market potential. Spravato currently generates around $2 billion in annualized sales, with consensus estimates projecting peak sales of approximately $4 billion.
Based on this comparison, the Deutsche Bank (搜索) analyst projects BPL-003 could achieve peak U.S. sales of $4 billion, while VLS-01 could reach $2 billion. EMP-01 is estimated to have peak sales potential of $1 billion.
Regulatory Environment Improving
The regulatory landscape for psychedelic therapies appears to be evolving favorably. Hoang noted that while the FDA may have been skeptical of psychedelic therapies previously, regulatory friction has diminished.
"Upon FDA approval, a psychedelic drug is expected to undergo [Drug Enforcement Administration] (federal) rescheduling from Schedule I (no accepted medical use) to a more accessible Schedule (II-V) within 90 days, followed by rescheduling by most states over the next 30 days," he explained.
Growing Investor Interest
The psychedelic medicine sector has attracted increasing attention from both healthcare investors and large pharmaceutical companies. Drugs including MDMA, ketamine, and psilocybin are currently in clinical trials to evaluate their potential for treating mental health conditions that are resistant to conventional therapies.
"We believe the psychedelics space is now viewed as investable by healthcare investors and large pharma," Hoang stated, reflecting the broader industry shift toward accepting psychedelic compounds as legitimate therapeutic options for mental health disorders.
