Melbourne-based biotechnology company Mirugen (搜索) has secured A$4.5 million in seed funding to advance its cell reprogramming technology for treating retinal diseases. The financing round brings the company's total funding to A$7.1 million and will support development of its lead retinitis pigmentosa (搜索) program through translational development.
Novel Cell Reprogramming Platform
Mirugen (搜索)'s discovery platform leverages Nobel Prize-winning research in reprogramming to unlock cellular repair mechanisms. The company uses sequencing data, bioinformatics assessment, and high-throughput screening to identify transcription factors (搜索) that act as cellular "instructions" for reprogramming.
The lead candidate targets nascent stem cells in the eye called Muller glial cells (搜索) to replace and regenerate lost photoreceptors (搜索). "For the 1.5 million individuals worldwide affected by retinitis pigmentosa (搜索), severe depletion of the light-sensing cells in the eye - the photoreceptors - is the cause of progressive visual loss," explained co-founder and Medical Director Keith Martin.
Broader Therapeutic Potential
If successful, the cell reprogramming approach is anticipated to translate to other leading causes of blindness worldwide, including age-related macular degeneration (搜索) and Stargardt's disease. This positions Mirugen (搜索)'s technology platform to potentially address multiple retinal pathologies through a single therapeutic mechanism.
Leadership and Investment
The company has appointed Charlotte Casebourne Stock as executive chair and acting CEO. Stock brings significant experience in biologics development, having previously led Oxford-based Theolytics (搜索) from inception into the clinic while raising over $45 million. "Mirugen (搜索) has the potential to become the pioneer for in vivo cell (re)programming," Stock stated.
The funding round was led by a syndicate comprising Brandon Capital (搜索), Tin Alley Ventures (搜索), and the University of Melbourne Genesis Pre-Seed Fund, building on significant non-dilutive funding awards from CUREator.
Research Foundation
Mirugen (搜索) is a spin-out from the Centre for Eye Research Australia (CERA), an independent medical research institute affiliated with the University of Melbourne and Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital. The company leverages the co-founders' expertise in the fundamental biology of retinal repair.
Winnie Gao, an investment associate at the University of Melbourne Genesis Pre-Seed Fund, noted that "this co-investment in Mirugen (搜索) reflects our belief that world-class research moves faster through collaboration. By leveraging both capital and capability, we hope to facilitate the necessary support for Mirugen to scale and deliver its therapies to patients sooner."
