A pivotal 2022 study monitoring 10 million US military personnel confirmed that MS only developed in those who had tested positive for previous EBV exposure, demonstrating that people who have never been infected with EBV have a near-zero risk of developing the disease.
Recent research suggests that EBV infection may trigger the immune system's attack on the brain and spinal cord that initiates the MS disease process. The virus may also continue to drive MS disease activity through ongoing viral replication or latent-lytic cycling that continuously exposes the immune system to EBV antigens.
STOP-MS: Targeting Progressive Disease
The STOP-MS clinical trial addresses one of the most challenging forms of MS—progressive disease, where symptoms slowly worsen over time. Current therapies for progressive MS have limited effect on the rate of progression, creating an urgent need for new treatments.
STOP-MS will test whether antiviral drugs can slow down disability progression in people with progressive MS through a two-stage approach. If successful, the results could revolutionize treatment of this widespread MS symptom. Recruitment for FIRMS-EBV is expected to begin mid-2025.
