Axon Therapies Secures $32M Series A to Advance Novel Heart Failure Treatment Through Sympathetic Nervous System Ablation
核心洞察
Axon Therapies (搜索) closed an oversubscribed $32 million Series A funding round co-led by Earlybird Venture Capital (搜索) and Santé Ventures (搜索) to advance clinical development of its heart failure therapy.
The company will initiate two double-blinded randomized feasibility studies testing its Splanchnic Ablation for Volume Management (SAVM) approach in both HFpEF and HFrEF patient populations.
The Satera™ Ablation System represents a catheter-based, implant-free procedure targeting sympathetic nervous system overactivity, addressing a root physiological cause of heart failure progression.
Axon Therapies (搜索), a clinical-stage medical device company, announced the completion of an oversubscribed $32 million Series A financing round to advance its novel approach to treating heart failure through sympathetic nervous system modulation. The funding round was co-led by new investors Earlybird Venture Capital (搜索) and Santé Ventures (搜索), with participation from existing investor Deerfield Management (搜索) and new investors CD Capital and KOFA Healthcare.
The financing will support Axon's next phase of clinical development, including two double-blinded randomized feasibility studies targeting heart failure patients. The first study will serve as a confirmatory trial for the company's splanchnic ablation therapy in patients with Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction (HFpEF), while the second will be a multi-center study evaluating splanchnic ablation in patients with Heart Failure with Reduced Ejection Fraction (HFrEF).
Novel Therapeutic Approach Targets Root Cause
Axon's proprietary technology, Splanchnic Ablation for Volume Management (SAVM), addresses overactivity in the sympathetic nervous system, which represents a key mechanism that worsens heart failure progression. The company's Satera™ Ablation System delivers this therapy through a catheter-based, implant-free procedure designed to slow disease progression and improve patient quality of life.
"Heart failure is one of the leading causes of hospitalization and death worldwide, yet patients still face a lack of effective treatment options," said Dr. Zoar Engelman, who was appointed CEO of Axon Therapies (搜索) in conjunction with the financing. Dr. Engelman, previously the company's co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer, added, "Our implant-free, minimally invasive therapy is designed to address a core physiological driver of the disease. This funding positions us to advance to pivotal trials and bring hope to patients who urgently need new solutions."
Addressing Significant Unmet Medical Need
Heart failure affects more than 64 million people globally and is responsible for over 1 million hospitalizations annually in the United States alone. Despite advances in pharmaceuticals and devices, many patients remain symptomatic with few effective treatment options available.
The clinical development program supported by this funding aims to establish the foundation for pivotal trials of the SAVM approach. "These randomized feasibility studies are designed to significantly de-risk the therapy and establish a strong foundation ahead of a pivotal trial, creating what we believe will be a cornerstone technology for the right strategic partner," said Dr. James Eadie, Managing Director and Partner at Santé Ventures (搜索).
Strategic Expansion and Market Positioning
Concurrent with the funding announcement, Axon Therapies (搜索) established a new European headquarters, Axon Vascular Europe Ltd, in the United Kingdom. "The opening of our new European headquarters in the UK provides a focused hub to accelerate our clinical trial efforts and strategically positions us for future entry into the large European heart failure market," noted Dr. Engelman.
Dr. John Yianni, Partner at Earlybird Venture Capital (搜索), emphasized the investment rationale: "Our investment in Axon Therapies (搜索) was driven by a clear vision to address a large unmet clinical need and improve the lives of patients with heart failure. With Dr. Engelman's leadership and the team's groundbreaking technology, we are excited to support Axon as they advance solutions that can make a real difference for patients and their families."
The company, founded by MedTech incubator Coridea, is positioning its technology as a first-in-class solution targeting what investors describe as a multi-billion-dollar market opportunity in cardiovascular therapeutics.
