The theranostic approach operates through a two-step process that combines diagnostic imaging with therapeutic intervention. Researchers can create imaging agents to locate cancer cells expressing specific proteins, then substitute these imaging agents with therapeutic compounds that target the same cellular markers.
"What they've discovered is you can also create, not only this imaging agent to find where these cancer spots are located, but you can swap out the imaging agent for a therapeutic agent, and do this injection, and go and treat those same exact spots with a high degree of precision and exactness," Mancini detailed.

The ongoing clinical trials are demonstrating encouraging progress, according to Mancini. The precision targeting mechanism offers potential advantages in terms of both efficacy and tolerability compared to conventional cancer treatments.
"It typically is not only effective and helpful, but it doesn't really have a lot of side effects because of how precise the treatment is," Mancini noted. This favorable safety profile stems from the targeted nature of the therapy, which minimizes exposure to healthy tissues.
