BGI Genomics and GORTEC China Partner to Advance ctDNA-MRD and Multi-Omics in Precision Head and Neck Cancer Care
核心洞察
BGI Genomics (搜索) and GORTEC China (搜索) announced a strategic collaboration on August 16 to advance precision head and neck cancer (搜索) care through multicenter MRD research and multiplex immunofluorescence.
The partnership will explore ctDNA-based minimal residual disease (MRD) testing across treatment stages and assess whether molecular changes correlate with pathological response.
BGI Genomics (搜索) will contribute its independently developed personalized ctDNA-MRD technology, bioinformatics analysis, and research translation capabilities to the collaboration.
On August 16, BGI Genomics (搜索) announced a collaboration with the China–France Head and Neck Cancer (搜索) Joint Research Group (GORTEC China (搜索)), launched the same day in Shanghai. Under the agreement, the two parties will jointly conduct multicenter research on minimal residual disease (MRD) in head and neck cancer and advance the clinical application of BGI Genomics' multiplex immunofluorescence technology in precision diagnosis and treatment.
The partnership reflects a broader shift toward more tailored oncology approaches, reinforced by recent progress in personalized cancer therapies, including positive late-stage results from Merck (搜索) and Moderna's individualized cancer vaccine program. As treatment becomes increasingly personalized, the ability to identify the right patients, monitor response, and integrate multiple layers of molecular information has become equally important.
A Sino-French Platform for Head and Neck Cancer Research
GORTEC (Groupe d'Oncologie Radiothérapie Tête et Cou) is a French cooperative research organization, established in 1994, dedicated to head and neck oncology. GORTEC China (搜索), initiated with GORTEC's support and led by Chinese head and neck cancer (搜索) experts, aims to strengthen China–Europe clinical research cooperation through international multicenter studies, talent development, and academic exchange.
Professor Tao Yungan, founder of GORTEC China (搜索), President-elect of GORTEC, and chief expert in head and neck radiotherapy at Institut Gustave Roussy, described the collaboration as an effort to combine established clinical research capabilities with technological innovation.
"Combining Europe's established quality-management and regulatory framework with China's innovation capabilities can create a mutually beneficial partnership, help Chinese innovative drugs and technologies reach international markets, and ultimately benefit patients worldwide," Tao said.
One persistent challenge in oncology is determining which patients are most likely to benefit from new drugs or combination therapies, even when clinical trials demonstrate efficacy across a broader patient population. After visiting BGI Genomics (搜索) last year, Tao saw an opportunity to combine clinical research with BGI Genomics' capabilities in genomics and cancer testing to improve patient stratification alongside treatment-response assessment.
ctDNA-MRD and Multiplex Immunofluorescence in Focus
The collaboration will explore the use of ctDNA-MRD testing at different stages of treatment and assess whether changes in molecular indicators are associated with pathological response. Multiplex immunofluorescence will complement this approach by supporting more precise molecular pathology analysis.
BGI Genomics (搜索) will contribute its independently developed personalized ctDNA-MRD testing technology, together with bioinformatics analysis and research translation capabilities. MRD could support earlier treatment-response assessment, postoperative recurrence-risk stratification, and more individualized treatment decisions. At the research level, such collaborations could also contribute to more robust clinical evidence around ctDNA-MRD in head and neck cancer (搜索).
"Collaboration has to move forward step by step. It is impossible to conquer cancer all at once," Tao said.
The initial project is intended to establish a foundation for broader collaboration. In the long term, Tao hopes investigator-initiated studies from China can meet the standards of comparable European studies and eventually registration studies.
Moving Toward Multi-Omics Precision Oncology
For BGI Genomics (搜索) CEO Hou Yong, the partnership reflects a broader shift in the company's oncology strategy. The heterogeneity and continuous evolution of cancer make it difficult to address clinical questions through any single technology. Precision oncology increasingly requires the integration of different molecular and pathological data types to address specific clinical needs.
BGI Genomics (搜索) is therefore extending beyond individual genomic assays toward a broader framework covering prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring. Its oncology capabilities include MRD testing, multiplex immunofluorescence pathology, and other molecular and multi-omics technologies.
"If these technologies can be combined with leading innovative drugs and clinical trials, there is an opportunity to connect basic research, translational research, and clinical trials, while further increasing the international impact of Chinese technologies and innovative drugs," Hou said.
At the GORTEC China (搜索) Launch Conference, Hou delivered a keynote on "Liquid Biopsy + Spatial Pathology: A Dual-Pathway Approach to Precision Diagnosis and Treatment of Head and Neck Cancer (搜索)." He highlighted the promise of ctDNA-based MRD testing and multiplex immunofluorescence to enrich prognostic stratification, treatment response assessment, and recurrence monitoring across the full continuum of cancer care. He also joined a high-level dialogue on the international expansion of China's innovative medicines, discussing frontier technologies such as bispecific antibodies, antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs), and MRD.
Extending Multi-Omics Through AI
Artificial intelligence is also becoming part of the broader multi-omics strategy. BGI-Research and Zhejiang Lab jointly developed Genos, a human-centric genomic foundation model with tens of billions of parameters. Building on that work, BGI Genomics (搜索) developed GeneT, an innovative large language model (LLM) for genetic disease interpretation.
Oncology could become another area for LLM AI model development. BGI Genomics (搜索) aims to progressively integrate molecular pathology, genomic alterations, spatial proteomics, and medical imaging into multi-modal models for cancer diagnosis and treatment.
The complexity of such models reinforces the need for collaboration. Unlike genomic data alone, oncology applications require multiple data modalities that cannot be sufficiently generated and integrated by a single organization. Hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, diagnostic developers, AI companies, and researchers will therefore need to participate in a broader ecosystem spanning data governance, modeling, and clinical translation.
From Products to Integrated Solutions
The partnership also fits into a broader view of how Chinese medical technology companies can expand internationally. Hou described internationalization as progressing through three stages: exporting individual products, exporting integrated solutions, and eventually contributing to establish standards adopted in international clinical practice.
"Technology is only the entry ticket," Hou said.
Regulatory compliance, localization, and commercial capabilities remain critical to international adoption. For BGI Genomics (搜索), collaboration with established clinical and research organizations provides a way to connect its multi-omics capabilities with international research needs while building the scientific foundation for broader clinical adoption.
"Only through open research programs, open platforms, and open communication can more international peers truly understand China's precision medicine capabilities and ultimately benefit more cancer patients," Hou said.
