BioInnovation Institute backs six startups with €7.8M to bridge Europe's translational gap
核心洞察
The BioInnovation Institute (搜索) (BII) allocated €7.8 million in follow-on funding to six startups, moving each from its Venture Lab into the 18-month Venture House program.
Each recipient previously received a €500,000 convertible loan and now gains a €1.3 million loan to mature technologies toward external financing.
The funding is part of a larger expansion, with the Novo Nordisk Foundation (搜索) committing up to DKK 5.5 billion (€736 million) to scale BII through 2035.
The BioInnovation Institute (搜索) (BII) has allocated €7.8 million in follow-on funding to six startups, advancing each company from its Venture Lab into Venture House, an 18-month program designed to mature technologies and businesses toward external financing. The six recipients are PanTarg (搜索), 3Sonic (搜索), Inia Biosciences (搜索), Yngvi Bio (搜索), Proxi Biotech (搜索) and Sagava (搜索), each of which previously received a €500,000 convertible loan from BII and now gains a €1.3 million loan.
The allocation represents a relatively small piece of a much larger expansion at BII. Earlier this year, the Novo Nordisk Foundation (搜索) committed up to DKK 5.5 billion (€736 million) to scale the institute through 2035, with a mandate to turn more European research into companies and commercial technologies.
A translational bridge for European science
BII is increasingly becoming one of the Novo Nordisk Foundation (搜索)'s main vehicles for tackling Europe's gap between strong academic science and comparatively weak commercial translation. In June, that strategy took a more targeted form with the €60.2 million CardioMetabolic Bridge, a BII-managed network of incubators in the UK, Germany and Italy designed to turn academic cardiometabolic discoveries into drug development projects.
The six follow-on investments illustrate the other end of the same model: once projects have become companies, BII can continue financing them until they are ready to compete for institutional venture capital.
The six recipients
PanTarg (搜索), a University of Copenhagen and Rigshospitalet spinout, is developing antibody-based cancer therapies designed to attack both tumor cells and their supporting microenvironment, initially targeting pancreatic cancer (搜索).
3Sonic (搜索), spun out of Rigshospitalet and the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), is developing AI-supported 3D ultrasound to help surgeons assess cancer tissue during an operation.
Inia Biosciences (搜索) is developing a wearable ultrasound-based bioelectronic therapy to modulate inflammatory pathways, initially in psoriasis (搜索).
Yngvi Bio (搜索), a University of Copenhagen spinout, is developing biological pest-control technologies intended as more targeted alternatives to conventional pesticides.
Proxi Biotech (搜索), spun out of Denmark's Statens Serum Institut, is developing a vaccine-based immunotherapy against recurrent Clostridioides difficile infections (搜索).
Sagava (搜索), a DTU spinout, is developing technology to convert waste biomass into fuels and energy, with maritime decarbonisation as an initial application.
The portfolio reflects BII's broad mandate across life sciences and sustainability, spanning oncology, medical imaging, bioelectronics, vaccines, and industrial biotechnology.
