"Ovarian cancer (搜索) remains one of the deadliest gynecological malignancies, characterized by late diagnosis, high recurrence rates, and limited effective treatment options," said Dr. Siyao Tong of Khon Kaen University, the study's lead author. "Our goal is to find alternative drugs that can improve efficacy and potentially reduce toxicity, ultimately bringing new hope to patients facing this challenging disease."
Dual-Compound Approach Shows Enhanced Efficacy
The research team tested CBD and THC individually and in combination against two different ovarian cancer (搜索) cell lines—one sensitive to platinum-derived drugs and one resistant to such treatments. Both compounds demonstrated the ability to prevent cancer cell reproduction, with treated cells forming fewer and smaller colonies compared to untreated controls.
The combination therapy proved particularly effective, with Dr. Tong noting that "the inhibitory effect was most pronounced when CBD and THC were used in a 1:1 ratio." While neither compound alone killed a large proportion of cancer cells, their combination showed significant cell-killing activity, suggesting that THC and CBD may act through different mechanisms that amplify each other's effects when used together.
Mechanism of Action and Metastasis Prevention
The study revealed that the cannabis compounds work by targeting the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway, which is overactivated in ovarian cancer (搜索) cells and contributes to tumor development and treatment resistance. The CBD and THC compounds appeared to restore normal regulation of this pathway, potentially explaining why cancer cells couldn't reproduce and began dying after treatment.
Additional laboratory assays demonstrated that the compounds prevented cancer cells from migrating, suggesting they might be able to stop ovarian cancer (搜索) from spreading to other parts of the body. This anti-metastatic property could be particularly significant, as many ovarian cancer patients die from metastases rather than the primary tumor.

Dr. Tong acknowledged several limitations of the current research. "All experiments were conducted in vitro, so the results may not fully reflect the complexity of tumor behavior in living organisms," he explained. "We did not include in vivo models and pharmacokinetic data, which are crucial for determining whether CBD/THC can be safely and effectively used clinically."
The researchers also noted that regulatory and legal issues surrounding cannabinoid therapy may affect future translational research efforts.
"Although our study is still preliminary, it lays an important foundation for future research into the potential applications of CBD and THC in ovarian cancer (搜索) treatment," said Tong. "By confirming their anti-cancer activity and identifying key molecular mechanisms, our findings are expected to drive further preclinical research. If future studies confirm these effects, CBD-THC combination therapy may ultimately contribute to the development of new treatment strategies."
The research team emphasized that much more work remains before these laboratory findings can be translated into practical treatments for patients, calling for comprehensive preclinical studies including animal models and pharmacokinetic analyses to establish the safety and efficacy of these compounds in living systems.
