Cannformatics Receives IRB Approval for Medical Cannabis Study in Dementia Patients
核心洞察
Cannformatics (搜索)' proof-of-concept study evaluating medical cannabis for behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (搜索) has received IRB approval at Northwell Health and is cleared to begin patient recruitment.
The MAC-BPSD study will utilize Cannformatics (搜索)' proprietary C-Res™ biomarker platform to objectively measure how cannabinoids impact agitation, anxiety (搜索), and other dementia (搜索)-related behavioral symptoms.
The research represents a collaboration between Northwell Health's clinical expertise and Cannformatics (搜索)' AI-powered metabolic biomarker technology to advance evidence-based cannabinoid treatments for dementia (搜索) care.
Cannformatics (搜索) Inc., a San Francisco-based biotechnology company, has received Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval for a proof-of-concept study evaluating medical cannabis treatment for dementia (搜索) patients at Northwell Health. The study, cleared to begin patient recruitment, marks a significant step toward evidence-based cannabinoid therapy for neurological conditions.
Study Design and Objectives
The research, titled "Changes in salivary biomarkers in patients receiving Medical Cannabis Treatment for Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (搜索) (MAC-BPSD): the potential of salivary biomarkers to identify and quantify positive responders," will evaluate how cannabinoids impact agitation, anxiety (搜索), and other Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD).
The study is led by Diana Martins-Welch, MD, associate professor at the Feinstein Institutes and Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, who specializes in hospice and palliative medicine. Co-investigators include Edith Burns, MD, professor at the Feinstein Institutes and director of research for Northwell Health's Division of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine, and Kenneth R. Weinberg, MD, Chief Medical Officer of Cannabis Doctors of New York (搜索).
Biomarker Technology Platform
Cannformatics (搜索) is providing its proprietary Cannabis-Responsive™ (C-Res™) biomarker platform for the study. This saliva-based technology identifies metabolic changes linked to cannabinoid use, combining Northwell Health's clinical research leadership with Cannformatics' biomarker expertise to generate objective, quantifiable data on the effects of cannabinoids in dementia (搜索) care.
"The IRB's approval marks a major milestone for Cannformatics (搜索) as we expand our C-Res™ platform to address dementia (搜索), along with other conditions related to endocannabinoid system (搜索) (ECS) imbalance, including autism (搜索), epilepsy (搜索), post-traumatic stress (搜索) and anxiety (搜索)," said Itzhak Kurek, PhD, Co-founder and CEO of Cannformatics.
Clinical Significance and Future Applications
Dr. Weinberg emphasized the potential clinical impact of the research, stating, "As a physician successfully treating Alzheimer's (搜索) patients with medical cannabis, I've seen firsthand the reduction in agitation and improvement in quality of life for both patients and caregivers. This study will move the conversation from subjective reports to objective measurements and begin to explain how cannabis is working for people with dementia (搜索)."
The research represents a step toward evidence-based, personalized medical cannabis treatment for dementia (搜索). Findings from the MAC-BPSD study are expected to inform future large-scale clinical trials and guide development of precision cannabinoid therapies.
Company Background
Cannformatics (搜索) develops AI-powered metabolic biomarkers to measure, predict, and design effective cannabinoid-based treatments for medical conditions linked to endocannabinoid system (搜索) imbalance. The company's technology aims to personalize medical cannabis treatment through objective biomarker measurements rather than subjective assessments.
