China Poaches 105 Top US Scientists as Biotech Brain Drain Accelerates

China is aggressively recruiting America's top scientific talent in a bid to dominate fields including medicine, biotechnology, and space, with at least 105 of the nation's best and brightest researchers defecting to Chinese institutions since 2024, according to an analysis by The New York Post.
Nearly half of the recent wave of defectors specializes in biotechnology and medicine, signaling that China is investing heavily to surpass the United States in medical innovation. The researchers have left leading American universities and major corporations for Chinese universities and research institutes, many of them state-backed, drawn by generous research funding, competitive salaries, and access to advanced laboratories.
"The battlelines being drawn in the global war for scientific talent are critical for national security," said Jack Burnham, senior research analyst at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies' China Program. "Beijing is increasingly betting that paralyzed federal science funding, concerns over immigration status for foreign workers and students at US universities, and its own pool of increasingly cutting-edge researchers will give it an advantage over Washington."
High-Profile Defections Reshape the Scientific Landscape
Among the most prominent recruits is Charles Lieber (搜索), the former chair of Harvard University's chemistry department, who joined Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School as a chair professor in May 2025 and became an investigator at the Shenzhen Medical Academy of Research and Translation. Lieber, who was convicted in 2021 of lying to federal authorities about his ties to China, was reportedly promised a salary of $750,000 plus $150,000 in living expenses, along with his own sprawling research laboratory. His new lab, bankrolled entirely by the Chinese government, builds on three decades of work at Harvard where he received at least $8 million in Department of Defense funding.
Nobel Prize-winning chemist Omar Yaghi (搜索), 65, left the University of California, Berkeley in July 2025 for Tsinghua University in Beijing, where he is leading an institute that uses artificial intelligence to accelerate the discovery of new materials. Yaghi won last year's Nobel Prize in chemistry for creating sponge-like materials that can trap water and gas, with potential applications ranging from producing drinking water from desert air to capturing carbon dioxide. Ram Seshadri, a professor of chemistry and materials science at the University of California, Santa Barbara, told The New York Times that Yaghi's move reflects China's growing scientific strength: "They've overtaken us in many areas of materials science and chemistry. They're willing to invest very large sums of money to attract new talent."
Other notable defections include Zhonghua Gao (搜索), a leading brain development researcher who left Pennsylvania State University's College of Medicine in January to join the newly established Shenzhen University of Advanced Technology, where he will recruit additional researchers. During his more than two decades in the US, Gao led multimillion-dollar research on autism and cancer development funded by the National Institutes of Health.
Virologist Haitao Hu (搜索) departed the University of Texas last December for the Chinese Academy of Sciences Institute of Microbiology, where he will lead a team developing vaccines for major viral infections including HIV (搜索) — work that mirrors his more than four years of research at Walter Reed for the US Military.
Biologist Xianzhong Xu returned to China in May, months after four researchers in his lab at the University of Michigan were arrested for conspiring to smuggle biological material. Xu was not arrested and there is no evidence he was involved in the scheme. Astrophysicist Liang Dai, 38, left Johns Hopkins University for Fudan University this spring; he was awarded a Sloan Research Fellowship for the "brightest young scientists" in 2021.
China's Escalating Investment in R&D
China's government spending on research and development rose 90% to $133 billion between 2013 and 2023, compared with a 12% increase to $155 billion in the United States over the same period. Chinese public R&D spending is expected to surpass that of the US within the next two to three years, according to Nature.
Alessandra Zimmermann, a budget analyst at the American Association for the Advancement of Science, noted that China has steadily increased its investment in science, including chemistry, and that the best measures of scientific achievement show China "has been outperforming the U.S. in top chemistry papers."
China has surpassed the US on several research performance measures. Its contribution to the 145 natural and health sciences journals tracked by the Nature Index is on course to be twice that of the US by the end of 2026. The country was the world's second-largest pharmaceutical market after the US last year and overtook the US in clinical trial volume in 2024.
Regulatory Freedom as a Draw
Beyond financial incentives, scientists are drawn by perceived regulatory advantages in China. "There's more and more interest in what China has been developing. They're doing heavy recruiting in the US, and there's an interest among scientists in the US because they have so much more freedom to advance treatments in China as opposed to what we've been mired down in regulatory restrictions in this country," said Dr. Roberta Shapiro, professor at Columbia University Medical Center and chief medical officer at Crescel.
The FBI has repeatedly warned that Chinese talent recruitment programs are part of a broader push to obtain foreign technology and expertise to bolster China's strategic and military ambitions. "Time and time again, the Communist government of China has proven that it will use any means necessary to advance its interests at the expense of others," FBI counterintelligence assistant director John Brown told the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. "Beijing aims to acquire our technology — often in the early stages of development — as well as our expertise, to erode our competitive advantage and supplant the United States as a global superpower."
