According to Guo Xiangyu, a scientist at Jinan University in Guangzhou who focuses on developing non-human primate models for major brain diseases (搜索), laboratory monkey prices have risen steadily since Chinese New Year. Suppliers are now generally quoting about 180,000 yuan (US$27,000) per animal.
"It is not just a question of price," said Guo, who works at the Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Non-Human Primate Research. "In many cases, the monkeys simply cannot be bought. Suppliers say they have all been pre-booked."
The supply crunch is having tangible consequences on research continuity. Guo noted that his laboratory requires between 30 and 50 monkeys each year for scientific work, including pathological and molecular biological analyses. With colonies fully booked, some researchers have been forced to put critical studies on hold.
Long macaque breeding cycles represent a fundamental structural challenge underlying the shortage. Unlike other laboratory animals, non-human primates require extended gestation and maturation periods, meaning supply cannot be rapidly scaled to meet sudden increases in demand from the pharmaceutical R&D sector.
The price escalation mirrors conditions seen during the pandemic, when demand for non-human primate models surged globally for COVID-19 vaccine and therapeutic development. The current wave, however, appears driven by broader momentum in China's innovative drug pipeline, spanning multiple therapeutic areas including neuroscience, where primate models are considered particularly valuable for translational research.
The situation underscores growing pains in China's rapidly expanding biopharmaceutical ecosystem, where infrastructure supporting preclinical development is straining to keep pace with the volume of drug candidates advancing toward clinical evaluation.
