The multi-year agreement establishes a framework to facilitate research collaborations spanning the exploration of disease biology, the identification of novel drug targets, and the development of new therapeutic approaches. The agreement represents a significant step in Chugai's global open innovation strategy, deepening the company's ties with one of the world's leading academic research institutions. Under the framework, the two organizations will leverage UCSF's scientific innovation and translational research capabilities together with Chugai's proprietary technologies—including antibody engineering, macrocyclic peptides via the SnipeTide™ platform, and small molecules—to advance early-stage research toward next-generation medicines.

A Bridge Between Two Innovation Hubs
The agreement was developed through close collaboration between Chugai Partnering U.S., the partnering function based at the South San Francisco branch of Chugai Pharma USA, Inc. (CPUSA), a wholly owned subsidiary of Chugai, and UCSF Innovation Ventures, UCSF's office responsible for industry partnerships, technology commercialization, and innovation initiatives.
The South San Francisco office, launched approximately six months prior to this announcement, is led by Andrew Wong, Head of Chugai Partnering, U.S. The team works closely with Chugai's global partnering teams worldwide to connect with biotech startups, academic researchers, and venture investors. "Our mission is to identify and build partnerships with the most innovative academic researchers, biotechnology companies, and venture investors in the U.S.," Wong stated in a recent interview describing the office's strategic role.
Complementary Capabilities and Strategic Fit
David Morris, MD, Vice Chancellor for Business Development, Innovation and Partnerships at UCSF, emphasized the catalytic role of such industry-academic partnerships. "Innovation Ventures acts as a catalyst for turning early UCSF science into real therapies, and partners like Chugai Pharmaceutical offer complementary technologies that can turbocharge that environment even further," Morris said. "This agreement gives us a much faster, more direct way to bring UCSF's science together with Chugai's discovery capabilities and development expertise."
The collaboration aligns with Chugai's broader partnering philosophy, which emphasizes scientific synergy over transactional speed. Yutaka Matsuda, Global Head of Search & Evaluation at Chugai in Tokyo, described the company's approach: "Our style is unique compared with that of other large pharmaceutical companies. Our research division has a strong voice because we focus on creating synergy with its activities. Our goal is not simply to speed up the contracting process, but to pursue high-quality scientific outcomes with our partners."
Chugai's Expanding U.S. Presence
The UCSF agreement comes amid a broader expansion of Chugai's footprint in the Bay Area life sciences ecosystem. In May 2026, Chugai joined the Industry Affiliate Program at Bakar Bio Labs, UC Berkeley's flagship incubator for biotech startups. As an Industry Affiliate, Chugai engages closely with resident startup teams and contributes to scientific and ecosystem development initiatives.
As a member of the Roche Group, Chugai operates with its own R&D and partnering strategy, a model that Wong describes as having "the best of both worlds." The company's track record includes a bispecific antibody for hemophilia (搜索), discovered and developed by Chugai and later commercialized globally through the Roche Group—a model the team believes can be replicated with external partners.
