Chugai Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. announced the launch of PiaSky® in Taiwan on October 1, 2025, through its wholly-owned subsidiary Chugai Pharma Taiwan (搜索) Ltd. (CPT (搜索)). The drug represents a significant milestone as Taiwan's first approved subcutaneous treatment for paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (搜索) (PNH (搜索)), targeting patients 13 years and older with body weight of at least 40 kg.
PiaSky is approved for both untreated and previously treated patients with C5 (搜索) inhibitors, addressing a critical gap in treatment options for this rare hematopoietic stem cell disease. The Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (TFDA) granted an orphan drug import license on May 19, 2025, following orphan drug designation by the Ministry of Health and Welfare on April 24, 2025.
Innovative Antibody Engineering Technology
PiaSky represents Chugai's proprietary anti-C5 (搜索) recycling antibody™ technology, designed to achieve superior therapeutic outcomes through advanced engineering. The recycling antibodies utilize pH-dependent antigen binding, allowing a single antibody molecule to bind with the antigen multiple times, resulting in longer efficacy compared to conventional antibodies.
The drug incorporates surface charge modification technology that increases the clearance rate of antigens from the blood, enabling more efficient neutralization compared to conventional recycling antibodies while reducing the required dosage. PiaSky targets C5 (搜索), a key component of the complement system, and is expected to control complement activity effectively.
Addressing Treatment Challenges

The subcutaneous administration every 4 weeks with a small volume of medicine is expected to reduce treatment burden for PNH (搜索) patients and their caregivers. Notably, PiaSky binds to complement C5 (搜索) at a different site from existing antibody drugs, making it an effective treatment option for patients with specific C5 gene mutations that appear in approximately 3.2% of Japanese PNH patients, which causes existing antibody drugs not to bind to C5.
Global Regulatory Success
PiaSky has demonstrated strong regulatory acceptance across major markets. The drug received approval in Japan in March 2024 and launched in May of the same year. Subsequently, it obtained approval in the US in June 2024 and in Europe in August 2024. Clinical trials are currently ongoing for atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (搜索) (aHUS (搜索)), expanding its potential therapeutic applications.
Understanding Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria
Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (搜索) is a hematopoietic stem cell disease characterized by complement-mediated intravascular hemolysis, caused by clonal expansion of hematopoietic stem cells with mutations in genes involved in GPI anchor synthesis, including the PIG-A gene (搜索). The disease presents with two primary symptom types: those attributed to characteristic hemolysis in PNH (搜索), such as hemoglobinuria and thrombosis, and hematopoietic failures similar to those associated with aplastic anemia (搜索).
PNH (搜索) may cause serious complications, including chronic kidney disease (搜索) and pulmonary hypertension (搜索). In Japan, PNH is classified as a rare disease and listed as one of the designated intractable diseases (designated intractable disease 62), with 1,121 individuals granted medical care recipient certificates for PNH as of the end of 2024.
