Compass Pathways Accelerates COMP360 Depression Therapy Launch by 9-12 Months Following FDA Meeting
核心洞察
Compass Pathways is advancing the expected launch of its experimental psilocybin-based depression (搜索) therapy COMP360 by 9 to 12 months following a positive FDA meeting.
The company will pursue a rolling submission strategy, allowing the FDA to review trial results as they are completed rather than waiting for a complete application package.
COMP360 is designed as a short-term, episodic alternative to daily antidepressants for patients with treatment-resistant depression (搜索) who have failed at least two different treatments.
Drug developer Compass Pathways announced Tuesday it is accelerating the expected launch timing of its experimental psilocybin-based depression (搜索) therapy by 9 to 12 months, sending shares nearly 6% higher. The decision follows completion of enrollment for a late-stage study and a positive meeting with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (搜索) regarding marketing application strategies.
FDA Meeting Enables Rolling Submission Strategy
Following the positive FDA meeting, Compass plans to pursue a rolling submission approach, providing trial results as they are completed for the agency to review upon receipt. This differs from the usual process where companies submit their entire application at once, potentially expediting the regulatory timeline for COMP360.
COMP360 Targets Treatment-Resistant Depression
The experimental therapy COMP360 is based on the psychedelic compound psilocybin and is designed as a short-term, episodic alternative to daily antidepressants. The company is testing the therapy in patients with treatment-resistant depression (搜索), a condition in which patients do not respond adequately to at least two different treatments.
In June, data from a late-stage study showed the therapy reduced the severity of depression (搜索) symptoms in a closely watched study, but fell short of market expectations. However, Wall Street analysts indicated the data suggested COMP360 might receive approval.
Growing Psychedelic Treatment Market
The fast-growing market for psychedelic-based treatments for psychiatric conditions could be worth up to $50 billion, according to analysts. This year, AbbVie (搜索) announced it would acquire an experimental psychedelic-based depression (搜索) drug from Gilgamesh Pharmaceuticals (搜索) for up to $1.2 billion, highlighting industry interest in the space.
Atai Life Sciences (搜索), Cybin (搜索) and MindMED (搜索) are among other companies developing psychedelic-based treatments for psychiatric conditions. Berenberg analyst Harry Gillis noted this development provides "evidence of the supportive regulatory environment for the development of psychedelics for mental health conditions, which should benefit companies like Atai."
Upcoming Data Readouts and Pipeline Expansion
Compass plans to announce 9-week data and 26-week data from two separate late-stage studies testing COMP360 next year. BTIG analyst Thomas Shrader emphasized that these trial results "are important longer term as we expect this market to eventually become competitive."
The company is also testing COMP360 as a treatment option for post-traumatic stress disorder (搜索), expanding its potential therapeutic applications beyond treatment-resistant depression (搜索).
