"As far as I'm concerned, this is a public health crisis and an emergency. We need to do more education around this, we need to get the word out and we need to ensure that people are informed about what's happening around them," Gaston said. He also encouraged those at risk of exposure to seek assistance and resources, adding, "If you need to talk to someone, please know that we are available to get you the kind of help and support that you need."
Veterinary Sedatives in the Illicit Supply
The warning comes as local health leaders issue an urgent alert, on the eve of National Recovery Month, about an influx of highly dangerous illicit substances flooding the state. John Hamilton, head of the Bridgeport nonprofit Liberation Programs (搜索), says a new wave of deadly illegal drugs is entering Connecticut at an alarming rate.
According to Hamilton, veterinary drugs like xylazine are increasingly appearing in combination with fentanyl. This specific mixture is highly toxic and can easily prove deadly, he said.
Harm Reduction Response and Awareness Gap
In response to the threat, Liberation Programs (搜索) is deploying analysis services, fentanyl testing strips and Narcan distribution. Hamilton emphasized, however, that community awareness remains the most critical line of defense.
"We're doing what we can, but we have to increase the sense of awareness," Hamilton said. "There are people out there that naive will purchase something and they don't know what they're purchasing."
Both the medetomidine and xylazine warnings point to a shared clinical concern: sedatives intended for veterinary use are circulating alongside fentanyl in the street drug supply, complicating overdose risk and withdrawal management for people who use drugs in the Bridgeport area.
