Significant Clinical Impact for High-Risk Patients
The research revealed that COVID-19 (搜索) boosters prevented one hospitalization or ICU admission for every 150-166 boosted cancer (搜索) patients. "The reduction in hospitalizations was significant, and the number of patients we needed to treat to see a benefit to the boosters is quite low," said Jane Figueiredo, PhD, director of Community Health and Population Research at Cedars-Sinai and senior author of the study.
Both the original monovalent booster (搜索) and the updated bivalent booster (搜索) targeting multiple COVID-19 (搜索) strains showed similar effectiveness in reducing hospitalizations by nearly 30 percent. When compared to people without compromised immune systems, cancer (搜索) patients showed similar percentage reductions in hospitalizations, but required fewer vaccinations to prevent a single hospitalization.
Low Booster Uptake Despite Proven Benefits
Despite the demonstrated effectiveness, the study revealed concerning trends in vaccination rates among cancer (搜索) patients. By January 1, 2022, only 68% of cancer patients had received a booster shot. The uptake was even lower for the updated bivalent boosters, with only 38% of patients receiving them after they became available.
"Whether this is due to patient concerns about safety or provider uncertainty about whether to administer a vaccine during treatment is not clear," Figueiredo noted. "What is clear is that we need to advocate strongly for vulnerable groups, including cancer (搜索) patients, to receive these vaccines."
Supporting Evidence for Current Guidelines
The findings provide crucial real-world evidence supporting major health organizations' recommendations for COVID-19 (搜索) vaccination in cancer (搜索) patients. "Cancer patients are a vulnerable population. Their immune systems can be weakened by their disease and the treatments they receive, which is why major health organizations recommend that these patients be vaccinated against COVID-19," Figueiredo explained.
James M. Crawford, MD, PhD, professor in the Institute of Health System Sciences at the Feinstein Institutes and co-principal investigator of the study, emphasized the clinical significance: "COVID-19 (搜索) vaccines can offer another layer of protection for individuals navigating cancer (搜索) treatment. It adds substantially to our understanding of the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines."
The research team plans to continue investigating vaccine effectiveness as new formulations become available and variants emerge. Figueiredo's team is also preparing to publish vaccine effectiveness data on patients with autoimmune diseases and solid organ transplant recipients, expanding understanding of how these vaccines work across different immunocompromised populations.
The study's findings underscore the importance of vaccination discussions between cancer (搜索) patients and their healthcare providers, particularly given the substantial protection offered by booster shots in preventing severe COVID-19 (搜索) outcomes in this high-risk population.
