Public acceptance of genetically modified organisms in Nigeria is driven more by cultural beliefs, media narratives, and institutional trust than by the underlying science, according to a new review of evidence spanning 2010 to 2024. The findings underscore a persistent disconnect between the country's regulatory approval of biotech crops and the divided public opinion that continues to hinder broader adoption.
Researchers examined scientific publications, policy documents, and media reports to identify the key forces shaping public perceptions of GMOs. Their analysis revealed that low public awareness, deeply held cultural and religious beliefs, negative media framing, and limited trust in regulatory institutions all contribute to widespread skepticism. While government policies formally support agricultural biotechnology, the study noted that unclear policy communication has widened the gap between regulatory decisions and public understanding.
"Public opinion remains divided because of limited awareness and ineffective science communication," the researchers stated, emphasizing that the challenge is not merely informational but deeply rooted in social and cultural dynamics.
The review highlights that media coverage plays an outsized role in framing GMO narratives. Negative reporting tends to amplify public fears, while positive or neutral coverage remains sparse. Combined with low baseline knowledge about biotechnology, this media environment creates fertile ground for misinformation and resistance.
Trust in government and regulatory bodies emerged as another critical factor. The study found that limited confidence in the institutions overseeing biotechnology regulation further erodes public willingness to accept GM crops, even when those crops have passed formal safety assessments and received official approval.
In response to these findings, the researchers concluded that improving public acceptance of GMOs in Nigeria will require a multi-pronged approach. They recommend culturally sensitive engagement strategies that respect local beliefs and values, alongside stronger science communication efforts that make biotechnology more accessible and understandable. Greater transparency in biotechnology regulation is also essential, they argue, to rebuild public trust and close the gap between policy and perception.
