Daewoong Pharmaceutical (搜索) has received a notice of allowance from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for ionizable lipid technology, the core foundational technology behind its eTurna messenger RNA (mRNA (搜索)) delivery platform. The allowance indicates the patent application has been approved, though the company must complete additional procedures before the patent is formally registered and enforceable in the United States.
The patent, titled "Lipid Structures and Compositions Comprising the Same," covers ionizable lipid structures and related lipid nanoparticle (LNP) technology that deliver therapeutic nucleic acids such as mRNA (搜索) to target cells. Ionizable lipids are used to form the lipid nanoparticles that encapsulate mRNA strands, enabling them to reach targeted cells—a key component of mRNA-based treatments.
Strengthening an mRNA-Based Anti-Aging Platform
The decision marks Daewoong Pharmaceutical (搜索)'s first global patent achievement since it acquired the cell reprogramming intellectual property and assets of U.S. biotech firm Turn Biotechnologies (搜索) in May. Through that acquisition, the company obtained IP related to the Epigenetic Reprogramming of Aging (ERA) platform, an mRNA (搜索)-based cell reprogramming technology.
ERA is a partial reprogramming technology that delivers reprogramming factors to aged cells in the form of mRNA (搜索), restoring cellular function to a younger, healthier state while preserving cell identity. The eTurna LNP platform delivers the mRNA to the intended cells during this process, and ionizable lipids—its key component—determine delivery efficiency and safety.
Preclinical Evidence of Regeneration and Reduced Aging Markers
According to the patent specification, delivering the LNP to human dermal fibroblasts and aged tissue increased collagen VII (搜索) expression, a marker of skin regeneration, along with cell proliferation, while reducing aging markers. Delivery efficiency and cell viability were also confirmed in immune cells such as T cells, pointing to potential expansion beyond skin into immune disorders and intractable age-related diseases.
A Broader Shift in mRNA Therapeutics
The development comes as mRNA (搜索) technology expands beyond vaccines for infectious diseases into areas such as cancer and other therapeutic applications. Moderna and Merck (搜索), for example, have advanced their personalized mRNA cancer vaccine into late-stage clinical development. Daewoong Pharmaceutical (搜索) plans to develop the anti-aging field as a new growth engine.
Global market research firm Precedence Research projects the global anti-aging therapeutics market will reach about $9.3 billion, or roughly 14 trillion won, by 2035. Altos Labs (搜索) and Life Biosciences (搜索) are also developing related treatments.
Daewoong Pharmaceutical (搜索) expects that once the patent is formally registered, securing ionizable lipid rights in the United States will support the global commercialization and technology licensing of its anti-aging pipeline.
