The restructuring, reported by the Financial Times, sees the majority of original AlphaFold authors reassigned internally, while nearly a quarter have left the company entirely.
The shakeup coincides with high-profile leadership departures. Demis Hassabis, who shared the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for AlphaFold (搜索), is stepping down from his CEO role at Google DeepMind (搜索). In a note to staff, Hassabis wrote that he believes artificial general intelligence is close at hand and that "getting the next steps right is critical for humanity." He will spend more time at Isomorphic Labs (搜索), Alphabet's AI drug discovery unit, which he has described as the top application of AI for improving human health.
John Jumper, vice president and engineering fellow who also received the 2024 Nobel Prize for AlphaFold (搜索), has moved to Anthropic (搜索), where he is joined by fellow AlphaFold researchers Jonas Adler and Alexander Pritzel. One DeepMind employee told the Financial Times that all three had been "instrumental, important, core members" of the company and that their departures sparked surprise internally.
Strategic Evolution Away from Grand Challenges
Pushmeet Kohli, vice president of research at Google DeepMind (搜索) and founder of the AI for Science team, confirmed the strategic shift. "Our strategy over the last nine years has been to focus on grand challenges… a concrete goal every project is focused on," Kohli told the Financial Times. "The strategy has evolved."
Rather than organizing researchers around single scientific problems like protein folding, the lab is now building Gemini-powered systems designed to assist scientists and eventually automate parts of the scientific process. The reassigned AlphaFold (搜索) researchers are working on projects spanning Google's Gemini large language model, enzyme design, nuclear fusion, and genomics.
Leadership Reshuffle and Talent Exodus
Koray Kavukcuoglu, DeepMind's chief technology officer and Alphabet's chief AI architect, is taking over daily operations as senior vice president of Google DeepMind (搜索), reporting directly to CEO Sundar Pichai rather than holding a standalone CEO title. He will oversee Gemini model development going forward.
The restructuring also includes the departure of Jeff Dean, Google's chief scientist and a 27-year veteran. Dean is leaving to co-found Discovery Loop, a public benefit corporation aimed at automating machine learning, science, and engineering research. He is joined by former Googlers Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals, and Quoc Le. Alphabet is a founding investor and will supply cloud compute.
In a note to staff, Pichai wrote: "After an incredible 27-year run, Jeff Dean is at a moment where he wants to try something new, and we're excited to support him in that."
Implications for AI-Driven Drug Discovery
The dismantling of the AlphaFold (搜索) team carries significant implications for pharmaceutical R&D. Isomorphic Labs (搜索), spun out of DeepMind in 2021, now stands as the primary vehicle for translating AlphaFold's protein-structure capabilities into drug discovery applications. The subsidiary holds partnerships with Novartis and Eli Lilly.
