Doctors Achieve Landmark Recoveries with Haplo-Cord Transplant and Dual-Target CAR T-Cell Therapy
核心洞察
Doctors at Narayana Health (搜索) in West Bengal successfully treated a seven-year-old boy with HbE beta thalassemia (搜索) using an advanced Haplo Cord transplant, leaving him transfusion-free.
The same team treated a 62-year-old Myanmar patient with primary CNS lymphoma (搜索) using a dual CAR T-cell therapy targeting CD19 (搜索) and CD22 (搜索) after chemotherapy failed.
Both cases were described as landmark achievements by clinicians, with each patient previously facing potential fatality.
Doctors from a private health facility in West Bengal have successfully treated a seven-year-old boy suffering from thalassaemia using an advanced Haplo Cord transplant process, while a separate team achieved a rare recovery in a 62-year-old patient with brain cancer through CAR T-cell therapy. Both cases were conducted by Narayana Health (搜索) and have been described as landmark achievements, with each patient previously facing potential fatality.
Haplo-Cord Transplant for HbE Beta Thalassemia
The parents of the seven-year-old child, who was diagnosed with HbE beta thalassemia (搜索) and required monthly blood transfusions, were counseled to register under the "Save the Sibling" programme. They underwent in vitro fertilization (IVF) and pre-implantation genetic testing to produce a matched, thalassemia-free sibling with compatible human leukocyte antigen (HLA), which is critical for bone marrow transplantation.
A haplo-cord transplant was subsequently performed using cord blood from the patient's sibling and some stem cells from his father. During the transplant period, the child developed complications including infections, mucositis, liver derangement, and persistent low blood counts, all of which were effectively managed. The patient has recovered well and is now transfusion-free, according to the doctors.
Dual-Target CAR T-Cell Therapy for Primary CNS Lymphoma
In a separate case, the team treated a 62-year-old male patient from Myanmar with brain cancer following a successful CAR T-cell therapy, an advanced type of immunotherapy. The patient initially presented with gait disturbance, an unusual change in the way a person walks, and was subsequently diagnosed with primary CNS lymphoma (搜索), a rare and aggressive type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (搜索) in which cancer cells form in the brain, spinal cord, cerebrospinal fluid, or eyes.
After receiving four cycles of high-dose chemotherapy that yielded unsatisfactory results, the doctors decided to proceed with CAR T-cell therapy. The patient underwent lymphocyte collection and bridging with radiation and other medications before receiving a dual CAR targeting CD19 (搜索) and CD22 (搜索) on the cancer cells.
Clinical Significance
Speaking about the two rare recoveries, Joydeep Chakrabartty, Senior Consultant, Hemato Oncology & Clinical Lead - BMT Programme (East) at Narayana Health (搜索), described them as landmark achievements, noting that both patients faced potential fatalities.
"Using the Haplo-cord technology for the child and the CAR T-cell therapy for the aged patient, the expert team of doctors attending them have been able to turn their lives around for the better. Narayana Health (搜索) has always been at the forefront in breaking new grounds in medical science, and these two cases clearly reflect that," Dr. Chakrabartty said.
Prasanta Chowdhury, Laboratory Director at Cord Life Sciences India Pvt. Limited (搜索), addressed the broader context of cord blood banking, describing it as a complex issue involving medical, financial, ethical, and scientific debates. "The core dilemma centres on choosing between private storage for family use and public donation for general use, weighed against high costs and low statistical odds of personal use. In these two cases, we have successfully addressed every single concern with absolute compassion and clarity," Dr. Chowdhury said.
