Training Protocol and Study Design
Researchers from the University of Bristol Veterinary School (搜索) initially began training five dogs to detect Parkinson's disease (搜索) through olfactory analysis. Three dogs were eliminated during the training process, leaving a 2-year-old Golden Retriever named Bumper and a 3-year-old Black Lab named Peanut to complete the intensive training program.
The remaining dogs underwent 38 to 53 weeks of training using more than 200 samples from both Parkinson's patients and healthy individuals. During training sessions, the dogs were rewarded each time they correctly identified a Parkinson's sample or appropriately ignored a healthy control sample.
Clinical Testing Results
In double-blind testing involving samples from 60 controls and 40 drug-naive Parkinson's patients, the dogs demonstrated impressive diagnostic capabilities. The canines achieved sensitivity rates of 70% and 80% respectively, while maintaining high specificity rates of 90% and 98%. "We are extremely proud to say that once again, dogs can very accurately detect disease," said Claire Guest, CEO and chief scientific officer of the U.K. charity Medical Detection Dogs (搜索). The testing protocol ensured that only a computer knew which samples originated from Parkinson's patients, eliminating potential bias.

The research team believes this canine detection method could serve as a foundation for creating quick, non-invasive, and cost-effective diagnostic tools. "I believe that dogs could help us to develop a quick non-invasive and cost-effective method to identify patients with Parkinson's disease (搜索)," Rooney concluded.
The agreement between the two dogs on positive samples exceeded chance expectations, further validating the reliability of the olfactory detection approach and supporting the existence of a consistent scent signature associated with Parkinson's disease (搜索).
