Ebola Treatment Centers Open at Outbreak Epicenter in DRC's Ituri Province

Samaritan's Purse (搜索) has established two Ebola Treatment Centers in Bunia and Nyankunde, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), to care for patients suffering from the deadly Ebola virus (搜索). These facilities are specially outfitted emergency field hospitals with 40 patient beds each, designed to help meet the urgent needs in Ituri Province, where nearly 90% of currently confirmed cases are located.
The Bunia facility opened on Sunday and is staffed by Samaritan's Purse (搜索) doctors and nurses providing direct hands-on care. The Nyankunde site opened Monday morning, delivering critically needed infectious disease treatment capacity to the existing hospital there.
"Ebola is an extremely dangerous virus, and the case numbers keep climbing," said Franklin Graham, president of Samaritan's Purse (搜索). "These Ebola Treatment Centers are going to help isolate and care patients who are suffering from the virus."
Surge Capacity and Deployment
Samaritan's Purse (搜索) has sent 65 disaster assistance response team members to support the effort. The organization has maintained a presence in the region for decades and operates a country office in the DRC. Beyond direct patient care, the response includes hygiene training, prevention education, and the installation of dozens of handwashing stations—measures critical to interrupting disease transmission.
Personal Protective Equipment and Supply Chain
The North Carolina-based organization has airlifted tons of personal protective equipment to safeguard healthcare providers in the DRC, including supplies for mission hospital partners. Samaritan's Purse (搜索) is actively procuring additional personal protective equipment to meet growing needs in the affected area.
Organizational Experience with Ebola Response
Samaritan's Purse (搜索) brings substantial experience to the current outbreak. In 2014, the organization responded to the Ebola outbreak in Liberia by opening a treatment center and providing hygiene training and prevention education to more than 1.6 million people. In 2018, Samaritan's Purse established an Ebola Treatment Center in the DRC, treating more than 600 patients while continuing community education on best practices to help stop disease spread.
