EIB and HERA Commit €30M to Ethris for Broad-Spectrum Nasal Antiviral mRNA

The financing supports Phase 2b development of ETH47, a first-in-class inhaled mRNA encoding interferon lambda (搜索) for asthma (搜索) and COPD (搜索) exacerbations.
ETH47 targets the host rather than the pathogen, potentially offering broad antiviral activity across multiple virus families and supporting pandemic preparedness.
The European Investment Bank (搜索) (EIB) and the European Commission's Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority (DG HERA (搜索)) have signed a €30 million financing agreement with Ethris (搜索) GmbH to advance clinical development of the company's respiratory mRNA portfolio, led by the broad-spectrum nasal antiviral candidate ETH47. The signing ceremony took place at Ethris' headquarters in Munich on Sept. 10, 2026.
The financing is structured as venture debt and is backed by DG HERA (搜索) as part of the European Commission's action on health emergency preparedness and response. It supports a development project with total costs of €91 million and is intended not only to extend Ethris (搜索)' financing runway but also to help mobilize additional private capital.
A Host-Directed Antiviral Approach
ETH47 is Ethris (搜索)' first-in-class mRNA-based product candidate encoding interferon lambda (搜索) (IFNλ). It is developed using the company's Stabilized Non-Immunogenic mRNA (SNIM®RNA) platform and is designed for local administration to the respiratory tract through inhalation or nasal spray using the proprietary Stabilized NanoParticle (SNaP®) lipid nanoparticle platform.
Rather than targeting a specific viral protein, ETH47 is intended to induce a mucosal innate immune defense response at virus entry sites and inhibit viral replication. According to the company, this virus- and mutation-independent mode of action has the potential to broadly address seasonal and emerging respiratory virus infections, including virus-driven exacerbation of chronic respiratory diseases such as asthma (搜索) and COPD (搜索).
"ETH47 is designed to activate the body's natural innate immune response rather than targeting specific viral proteins, giving it broad potential antiviral activity against a multitude of viral families," said Carsten Rudolph, Ph.D., Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of Ethris (搜索). Clinical Progress and Planned Phase 2b Trials
ETH47 is currently being evaluated in a Phase 2a trial for its antiviral activity in patients with asthma (搜索), and is planned to be evaluated in COPD (搜索) patients. Viral infections are major triggers of asthma and COPD exacerbation and are not addressed by current treatments, according to the companies.
The new financing will support advancing ETH47 into Phase 2b trials in patients with asthma (搜索) and COPD (搜索). Earlier development included initial positive Phase 1 data for nasal administration reported in June 2024, followed by full topline Phase 1 results in January 2025 based on 40 healthy volunteers. In that study, ETH47 produced a dose-dependent increase in IFNλ in the nasal mucosa and activated antiviral genes, while no systemic exposure was observed. In August 2025, the first patient was dosed in the Phase 2a trial, which is evaluating whether ETH47 can reduce respiratory symptoms in asthma patients following rhinovirus infection.

Portfolio Beyond ETH47
Beyond its lead candidate, Ethris (搜索) is developing additional respiratory mRNA programs, notably ETH52 (搜索) and ETH53 (搜索), which focus on mucosal influenza (搜索) vaccines and pandemic preparedness. The company is also receiving separate support for its preparedness activities: in early 2025, CEPI awarded Ethris $5 million to develop spray-dried RNA vaccines designed to improve room-temperature stability and enable mucosal administration.
HERA Invest and the Economics of Preparedness
HERA Invest is a €130 million top-up to the InvestEU programme, financed by the EU4Health programme, and aims to support R&D in the most pressing cross-border health threats. The instrument is intended for small and mid-sized companies developing and manufacturing medical countermeasures at the clinical trial stage, addressing threats including pathogens with pandemic or epidemic potential, chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear threats, antimicrobial resistance, and vector-borne diseases.
The EIB describes the underlying financing gap as a case of "market failure," noting that technologies addressing health threats can face limited access to appropriate commercial financing because of information asymmetries and misaligned incentives. A broad-spectrum antiviral is difficult to associate with a single pathogen and therefore with a clearly defined commercial market, which is why public-sector support is intended to share development risk and attract additional private capital rather than replace private investors.
"Today's HERA Invest agreement will support a company that has built on multiple innovative elements for the development of vaccine and therapeutic candidates in parallel," said Laurent Muschel, Deputy Head of DG HERA (搜索). "It has unlocked the potential of mRNA technologies, making it more stable and easier to administer. It is developing products that can be administered intranasally, allowing a local response at the pathogen entry site. It is also proposing to fight the infectious agents with a therapeutic targeting the host system rather than the pathogen directly, which may allow to fight several virus families rather than focusing on one pathogen at a time."
The immediate priority remains clinical development. The key question will be whether the biological effect demonstrated in early studies translates into meaningful protection against virus-driven exacerbations in patients.
