Elanco Launches Befrena, New Anti-IL-31 Monoclonal Antibody for Canine Allergic Dermatitis
核心洞察
Elanco Animal Health (搜索) has launched Befrena (搜索) (tirnovetmab (搜索)), a new anti-IL-31 (搜索) monoclonal antibody injection for treating canine allergic and atopic dermatitis, offering 6-8 weeks of itch relief compared to 4-8 weeks for the current market incumbent lokivetmab (搜索).
The treatment starts controlling itch within 24 hours and is administered as an in-clinic injection, targeting the $1.3 billion U.S. canine dermatology market where nearly 9 in 10 dogs experience itch symptoms.
Early Experience Program veterinarians are already using Befrena (搜索) in clinical practice with positive outcomes, including cases where dogs showed improvement within 24 hours and hair regrowth after significant hair loss.
Elanco Animal Health (搜索) Incorporated has announced the phased launch of Befrena (搜索) (tirnovetmab (搜索)), a new anti-IL-31 (搜索) monoclonal antibody injection for the treatment of canine allergic and atopic dermatitis. The launch addresses a significant market need, with nearly 2 in 3 itchy dogs experiencing worse symptoms during allergy season and a longer, more intense allergy season anticipated this year.
Enhanced Efficacy and Convenience
Befrena (搜索) offers several advantages over existing treatments in the canine dermatology market. The monoclonal antibody provides 6 to 8 weeks of itch relief, compared to the 4 to 8 weeks offered by the current market incumbent, lokivetmab (搜索). The treatment begins controlling itch within 24 hours of administration and works by neutralizing IL-31 (搜索), a key cytokine involved in sending itch signals to the brain.
The therapy is administered as an in-clinic injection by or under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian, with no age or weight restrictions for canine patients. Elanco received USDA approval for Befrena (搜索) in December 2025, making it the company's second dermatology product alongside Zenrelia (搜索) (ilunocitinib (搜索) tablets) to be approved and launched in the past two years.
Market Impact and Clinical Evidence
The commercial launch targets the $1.3 billion U.S. canine dermatology market, where nearly 9 in 10 dogs are considered "itchy dogs" by their owners, having experienced itch symptoms at some point throughout the year. According to Elanco's America's Itchy Dogs Report, veterinarians report that pet owners often wait too long before seeking treatment, resulting in raw and infected skin.
"The commercial launch of Befrena (搜索) into the $1.3 billion U.S. canine dermatology market is another exciting milestone in our innovation journey," said Bobby Modi, Executive Vice President, U.S. Pet Health and Global Digital Transformation. "We are seeing positive results from our Early Experience Program veterinarians who have started using Befrena in their clinics and will continue to increase supply of this new monoclonal antibody, as we scale our bioreactors with the anticipated manufacturing ramp-up."
Early Clinical Experience
Select veterinarians participating in the Early Experience Program have already begun using Befrena (搜索) in clinical practice with encouraging results. Beaux from Austin, Texas, was the first dog treated with Befrena after experiencing significant hair loss due to constant itching. According to Dr. Matt Lane at Liberty Animal Hospital, "Beaux is doing amazing, and his owner is excited to see his hair growing back. He stopped itching within 24 hours of receiving the injection and his owner and I are extremely pleased with the results."
Additional cases include Penelope and Zephyr, treated at Gigi's Animal Shelter in Columbus, Ohio, both experiencing seasonal allergies that impacted their behavior and quality of life. "We want to get these dogs relief and make sure they have the most comfortable experience as possible, and I think Befrena (搜索) shows some real promise for that," said Dr. Meghan Herron, Senior Director of Behavior, Research, and Education at Gigi's.
Expert Perspectives
Veterinary dermatologists involved in clinical trials and the Early Experience Program have expressed optimism about the treatment's potential. Dr. Tom Lewis, veterinary dermatologist and founder of Dermatology for Animals, stated, "I have been involved with two clinical trials and the Early Experience Program which has shown Befrena (搜索) to be a highly safe and effective product. This will become a very important treatment option for many allergic dogs and I am excited to use Befrena in my clinic."
Dr. Jason Pieper, veterinary dermatologist and tenured associate professor of dermatology at Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine, reported positive outcomes in his early experience: "I've had several patients respond very well including one unique case that has failed multiple other treatments for atopic dermatitis. And so far, two weeks after receiving Befrena (搜索), this dog's doing quite well, it's wonderful."
Strategic Portfolio Expansion
Befrena (搜索) represents Elanco's second monoclonal antibody launch in the U.S. pet health market, joining Trutect (搜索), the first and only approved therapeutic solution to treat canine parvovirus (搜索). This makes Elanco the only pet health company with two USDA-approved monoclonal antibody products, strengthening its position in the veterinary therapeutics market.
The launch comes as part of Elanco's broader innovation strategy, building on the company's 70 years of animal health heritage and commitment to developing products that prevent and treat disease in farm animals and pets.
