Eli Lilly is dropping CVS Health's drug benefit plan for its employees after the healthcare conglomerate stopped covering the company's weight-loss drug Zepbound in favor of Novo Nordisk's rival medication Wegovy, according to Bloomberg News reports citing people familiar with the matter.
Beginning January 1, Lilly employees covered by the company's medical plan will be automatically enrolled for coverage through pharmacy benefit manager Rightway (搜索), according to documents viewed by Bloomberg. The transition marks a significant shift in the pharmaceutical giant's employee benefits strategy following the formulary dispute.
CVS Formulary Decision Drives Corporate Response
CVS's Caremark (搜索) pharmacy benefit management unit decided in May to drop Lilly's weight-loss drug Zepbound as a preferred product from its reimbursement list effective July 1. The decision came after CVS retained Novo Nordisk's Wegovy following negotiations that secured more favorable pricing for the competing obesity (搜索) medication.
"Our move earlier this year to negotiate Lilly and Novo against one another drove significant savings for our clients," CVS spokesperson David Whitrap stated. The pharmacy benefit manager offers options that cover both Zepbound and Wegovy, but "this option is costlier for plan sponsors than our standard commercial formulary that excludes Zepbound," Whitrap added.
Strategic Shift to Alternative Benefit Manager
Eli Lilly characterized the change as part of routine reviews of its benefit service providers. "Rightway (搜索) offers competitive fees and services aligned with the best interests of our employees, retirees and their families," the company stated in an emailed response to Reuters. However, Lilly did not directly address whether the shift away from CVS was linked to the Zepbound coverage decision.
Rightway (搜索) operates as a pharmacy benefit manager that works on a fee basis. The company previously gained Tyson Foods (搜索) as a client last year when the food manufacturer also dropped CVS as its pharmacy benefit manager in favor of Rightway's services.
Market Dynamics and Client Retention
Despite losing Eli Lilly as a client, CVS maintains confidence in its overall business performance. CVS spokesperson David Whitrap noted that while the company won't comment on specific clients, "Caremark (搜索)'s overall client retention remains in the high 90% range year after year."
The dispute underscores the competitive dynamics in the rapidly growing obesity (搜索) drug market, where pharmaceutical companies are increasingly leveraging formulary decisions and pricing negotiations to gain market advantage. The move also demonstrates how coverage decisions by pharmacy benefit managers can directly impact business relationships between major pharmaceutical companies and healthcare service providers.
