Founder and Owner Andrey A. Tolmachev reflected on the milestone, describing a company that now employs more than 3,000 people across six countries and ranks among the top 20 contract research organizations (CROs) in the field.
The company's origins trace back to a pivotal moment in drug discovery. "When we started this journey back in 1991, the world of drug discovery was on the cusp of a revolution," Tolmachev said. "At that time, high-throughput screening was emerging as a powerful new approach, and we saw a clear opportunity to meet the rapidly growing demand for novel compound libraries, because novel and diverse chemistry was the key to success."
The REAL Approach as a Strategic Turning Point
Tolmachev identified the creation of the Enamine (搜索) REAL approach as the single most consequential strategic milestone in the company's history. "The idea that readily accessible molecules could be built through parallel synthesis in just a few steps unlocked a chemical universe that today holds trillions of synthesizable compounds," he explained. "That single innovation became the engine behind everything we built after, like screening collections and building blocks as well as the integrated platform."
The REAL Database and REAL Space have since grown from millions to tens of billions of synthesizable molecules, reflecting the company's evolving strategy as computational tools and artificial intelligence have advanced.
From Catalog Supplier to Integrated Partner
Enamine (搜索)'s evolution has required a fundamental internal shift in mindset and structure. Tolmachev described the company's realization "that everything, starting from chemistry to biology and computational science, can and should work as a single organism under one big roof."
