Eddie Baker, 83, the first participant in the trial, credits the treatment with extending his life by two years. "All I can say is, it is the most wonderful thing that ever happened to me because I know if I hadn't had that, I would not be on this planet to this day," Baker told the BBC.

"Our aim is to improve outcomes in this rare cancer (搜索), which has limited treatment options," Professor Bahl stated. "Penile cancer (搜索) can be a very aggressive disease, but this study shows we might be able to give men a little more time."

The trial highlighted significant challenges in penile cancer (搜索) diagnosis, often stemming from patient reluctance to seek medical attention due to stigma. Professor Bahl noted that late diagnosis is common in penile cancer cases, as patients may delay seeking treatment for symptoms including bleeding, rash, lumps or growths, and changes in skin color.
"In cancers like these, there is no support system, you can't go out and talk about it because most patients have never heard you can get cancer (搜索) in the penis," Professor Bahl explained. "If you ask ladies, they have heard about cancer in the cervix, in the vagina, but cancer in the penis never gets talked about."
Baker's case exemplified this pattern, as he delayed seeking medical attention for over a year before his diagnosis, ultimately requiring amputation and facing incurable disease.
Future Research Directions
The success of the EPIC trial has prompted Professor Bahl to plan a follow-up study investigating immunotherapy (搜索) administration at earlier disease stages. This approach aims to improve cure rates rather than simply extending survival in advanced cases.
"Penile cancer (搜索) is rare, and it usually presents externally first, so when patients are diagnosed, early treatments which can cure the cancer (搜索) are possible," Professor Bahl noted, emphasizing the potential for improved outcomes with earlier intervention.
Treatment Access and Funding
Despite the promising trial results, the immunotherapy (搜索) treatment used in EPIC remains unavailable through the NHS. Professor Bahl is currently applying to the Cancer Drugs Fund (搜索) to secure coverage for the small number of patients who may benefit from this treatment approach.
