Evonik (搜索) is investing US$100 million over five years to modernize its Tippecanoe, Indiana drug substance contract manufacturing site, strengthening U.S.-based CDMO services.
The investment will upgrade large 100 m³ reactors and critical systems to improve reliability, automation, ergonomics, and energy efficiency while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The Tippecanoe site houses the industry's largest high-potency API (HPAPI) operation with 170 m³ dedicated capacity and advanced containment systems down to 0.1 µg/m³.
Evonik (搜索) has announced a US$100 million investment to modernize its drug substance contract manufacturing site in Lafayette (Tippecanoe), Indiana, a move the company describes as a strategic necessity to meet surging demand for U.S.-based contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) services. The five-year initiative will upgrade key equipment—including 100 m³ reactors and other critical systems—to enhance reliability, enable greater automation, and improve ergonomics and operational efficiency.
"Strengthening our U.S. drug substance business is a strategic necessity. With demand surging, Tippecanoe plays a pivotal role in creating a more resilient and globally balanced asset footprint," said Guido Skudlarek, head of the Health Care business line at Evonik (搜索).
A Cornerstone of Global Small-Molecule Manufacturing
Evonik (搜索)'s Tippecanoe site, acquired from Eli Lilly in 2010, is the company's second-largest U.S. facility and ranks among the world's largest active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) manufacturing sites. It features the industry's biggest high-potency API (HPAPI) operation, with 170 m³ of dedicated capacity and advanced containment systems capable of achieving occupational exposure limits (OEL) down to 0.1 µg/m³. The site also offers 860 m³ of reactor capacity for general APIs, 2,500 m³ for large-scale fermentation, and a technology portfolio spanning 10 advanced platforms.
The modernization is characterized as an investment in Next Generation Technologies, aimed at preserving technology leadership and advancing energy-efficient processes. Evonik (搜索) stated that the smart preservation capital expenditure (CAPEX) will drive long-term growth, strengthen cost leadership, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, in line with the company's strict CAPEX guiding principles.
Responding to Rising Molecular Complexity and Geopolitical Pressures
The investment comes at a time when geopolitical uncertainties have underscored the importance of Western-based production for critical drug substances and delivery technologies. Simultaneously, modern therapeutic goals increasingly demand complex molecules that are more challenging to manufacture. Evonik (搜索) already supports complex synthesis, but rising molecular complexity necessitates continued investment to maintain and expand these capabilities.
"API complexity continues to rise, and this investment empowers us to work with our customers on even more challenging molecules for critical indications such as cancer (搜索), metabolic and cardiovascular diseases (搜索)," said Daniel Fricker, Head of the Drug Substance Product Line at Evonik (搜索) Health Care.
The project is supported by local government and will help secure more than 650 jobs at the facility while contributing to the local economy. Evonik (搜索) is balancing its global asset footprint across North America, Europe, and Asia, with a strategic emphasis on North America for its Drug Substance CDMO business. The Tippecanoe site has evolved from a single-company operation into a multi-customer CDMO serving complex drug substance projects across the pharmaceutical industry.
