Ex-BioNTech Execs Launch 'AI-Native' Cancer Surveillance Company Bios Life with $25M and Tempus Partnership

Two senior executives formerly at mRNA specialist BioNTech have launched a new biotech called Bios Life (搜索), which they describe as "an AI-native cancer (搜索) surveillance company." Ex-BioNTech chief strategy officer Ryan Richardson serves as chief executive, while Zach Taylor, formerly a senior vice president at BioNTech, takes on the role of chief operating officer. The company debuts with $25 million in seed financing led by Redmile (搜索), Vsquared Ventures (搜索) and Kindred Capital (搜索), with additional support from a collective of prominent healthcare and technology investors across the US and Europe.
Bios Life (搜索) intends to develop a virtual clinic offering a personalised and continuous approach to cancer (搜索) screening and care, including for cancer survivors and high-risk individuals, in what it calls a "new category of cancer care." According to Richardson, people who survive a cancer diagnosis or who are at high risk of developing the disease — around 40 million people in the US — often fall through the cracks of current healthcare systems and face fragmented and reactive care.
A Critical Unmet Need
The company is addressing a substantial clinical gap. In the US alone, over 40 million people are either at increased risk for cancer (搜索) or are cancer survivors. With more than 40% of individuals projected to be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetime, and over 30% of those cases identified at stages 3 or 4, Bios Life (搜索) is targeting a critical need with its predictive care platform.
Kevin Oeffinger, MD, Director of the Duke Cancer (搜索) Institute Center for Onco-Primary Care, underscored the stagnation in the field: "Cancer screening and surveillance have been at a relative standstill for the past 20-30 years. The vast majority of individuals at elevated risk of cancer are not screened according to standard-of-care guidelines, and one out of every five newly diagnosed cancers in the US is found in cancer survivors."
Technology Platform and Tempus Alliance
Bios Life (搜索) — which has teams in place in the US and UK — aims to deliver personalised risk assessment, tailored screening, and survivorship care with the goal of "finding cancer (搜索) sooner, intervening smarter, and improving lifelong outcomes at scale."
The company starts operations with the help of a strategic alliance with AI specialist Tempus (搜索), which was set up around a massive database of more than 7 million de-identified patient records — including imaging data, genomic information, transcriptomics profiles, and clinical text — that will be used to train, validate, and deploy predictive models across a wide range of common cancers.
The core of Bios Life (搜索)'s platform comprises proprietary technologies, including its Personalized Cancer (搜索) Risk and Cancer Surveillance Platforms. The company has also secured commercial rights to the Nucleotide Transformer genomics foundation model from BioNTech-InstaDeep, recognized as one of the most cited AI genomics models globally, capable of analyzing genomic signals at a single-nucleotide level.
The company's advanced AI technology platforms enable the delivery of tailored cancer (搜索) surveillance and holistic supportive care for each individual's unique circumstances. This results in the creation of a digital twin for every patient, which continuously updates their biological model, shifting from isolated screening episodes to integrated lifetime surveillance.
Furthermore, in collaboration with Ambry Genetics (搜索), now part of Tempus (搜索), Bios Life (搜索) plans to incorporate genetic screening into its preventive platform along with physician-ordered genetic testing within its survivorship program.

Launch Plans
