核心洞察
Exonate (搜索) has appointed Olav Hellebø, former ReNeuron CEO and Novartis UK COO, as its new chief executive to lead the company through its next clinical phase.
The Cambridge-based biotech is preparing a Phase IIb trial for EXN407, a topical eye drop targeting the VEGF (搜索) pathway for diabetic eye disease (搜索).
EXN407 offers a non-invasive alternative to intravitreal injections, potentially addressing the large population of patients who forgo treatment due to needle aversion.
Cambridge-based biotechnology company Exonate (搜索) Ltd. has appointed Olav Hellebø as Chief Executive Officer, strengthening its executive leadership as the company prepares to advance its lead candidate, EXN407, into a Phase IIb clinical trial for diabetic eye disease (搜索). The appointment, announced today, positions the company to build momentum across its proprietary platform targeting retinal vascular diseases through a novel, non-invasive approach.
Hellebø brings extensive leadership experience spanning ophthalmology, immunology, and oncology across both large pharmaceutical organizations and emerging biotech ventures. He previously served as Chief Executive Officer of ReNeuron Group (搜索) plc, where he in-licensed a retinitis pigmentosa (搜索) program from the Schepens Eye Research Institute, an affiliate of Harvard Medical School, and completed equity financings totaling $125 million. His career also includes senior roles as Executive Vice President at Schering-Plough (now Merck (搜索)), leading the US Biotech and Oncology business unit; Chief Operating Officer of Novartis UK and member of the Novartis Global Pharmaceutical Executive Committee; and President of Immunology at UCB (搜索), where he built and led the Immunology Division following the company's acquisition of Celltech plc.
Hellebø currently serves as Director at Oncoinvent and Cytovation, and as Chair at Blue Cell Therapeutics and ION Therapeutics. He graduated Summa Cum Laude in International Business Studies from Hofstra University and holds an MBA from IESE Business School.
A Differentiated Approach to Retinal Disease
Exonate (搜索) is targeting the VEGF (搜索) (Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor) pathway, one of the most extensively validated pathways in retinal disease. Unlike current standard-of-care therapies that require intravitreal injections directly into the eye, Exonate's lead candidate EXN407 is formulated as a topical eye drop. This non-invasive delivery mechanism represents a significant potential shift in treatment paradigms for patients with retinal vascular diseases, including diabetic eye disease (搜索).
"For the many patients who go untreated rather than accept injections, this is a compelling proposition," said Hellebø, commenting on the company's differentiated approach.
Regulatory-Endorsed Path to Registration
The company's Phase IIb study design has been endorsed by regulators, with a clear path to registration outlined. According to Hellebø, a positive result from the upcoming Phase IIb trial would be confirmed by a closely mirrored Phase III study, providing a streamlined development pathway toward potential market authorization.
Leadership Transition
Dr. Rafiq Hasan, Chair of the Board of Directors at Exonate (搜索), welcomed the appointment: "Olav combines deep scientific understanding with extensive operational and commercial leadership experience, gained across both large pharmaceutical companies and emerging biotechnology businesses. His expertise in ophthalmology, together with his proven ability to build and lead successful organisations, makes him ideally suited to guide Exonate as we continue to advance our pipeline and create value for patients."
Hasan also acknowledged the contributions of outgoing CEO Dr. Catherine Beech, one of Exonate (搜索)'s co-founders, who has been appointed as a Director and will continue to serve on the Board of Directors.
