Fast Walking Pace in 80s Linked to 50% Lower Risk of Cognitive Decline, Study Finds

A new study published in the journal Neurology has found that people in their 80s who maintain an exceptionally quick walking pace — dubbed "super movers" — are approximately 50% less likely to develop cognitive decline (搜索) than their slower-moving peers of the same age.
"A super mover is someone who is older than age 80 and performing much better than their peers," said Dr. Sofiya Milman of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, one of the study's authors.
The research team, which included Dr. Joe Verghese of Stony Brook University, analyzed data from nearly 4,000 older adults enrolled in a long-term aging study. Participants completed a timed walking test, and the fastest 9% — those with a gait speed at least 1.5 standard deviations above the average of their same-age peers — qualified as super movers.
"The biggest takeaway was that super movers are about 50% less likely to develop cognitive decline (搜索) than their peers who are not super movers, which is very impressive," Milman said.
The Muscle-Brain Connection
Walking well requires balance, coordination, and strength — all of which depend on healthy muscle. Bonnie Tsui, a science writer and author of On Muscle: The Stuff That Moves Us and Why It Matters, noted that the finding aligns with existing knowledge about muscle and cognitive health.
"I think that the finding isn't surprising because we know that muscle health is very much correlated with cognitive health, especially as we age," Tsui said. "Exercise makes your muscles grow, but it also makes your brain grow."
Prior research has linked regular exercise to greater volume in the hippocampus, the brain's hub for memory and navigation. The new study found that super movers tended to preserve hippocampal volume as they aged.
Tsui explained that muscle functions as an endocrine tissue: "When we move, our muscles release signaling molecules that affect other body systems, including boosting brain cell growth and regulating metabolism. So muscle health is cognitive health."
Among those signaling molecules is brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a protein that helps regulate glucose and plays an important role in the survival and maintenance of neurons, supporting memory and cognitive function.
Whole-Body Benefits of Walking
Dr. Amit Saini, a geriatrician with Kaiser Permanente in Northern California, emphasized that walking draws on many of the body's systems simultaneously.
"As you walk, your heart is beating faster, and when the heart is beating faster, not only is it pumping the blood into the muscle, blood is being pumped to the brain, also into the nerve, and to your other systems," Saini said. "Your lungs are also breathing at a little faster rate, which again is keeping them lighter and healthier."
Brain Resilience Despite Pathology
One of the study's more surprising findings emerged from autopsy results: some super movers showed brain plaques and tangles — abnormal proteins associated with Alzheimer's disease (搜索) and dementia (搜索) — despite having no cognitive symptoms during life. Researchers suggest that movement and the benefits of staying active may help the brain stay resilient even as it undergoes age-related changes.
Verghese noted that super movers were just as likely to show age-related wear and tear in their brain tissue as their slower-walking peers, yet on average they showed fewer symptoms of cognitive decline (搜索) during their lifetimes.
Genetics and Lifestyle Both Matter
Genetics likely play a role in who becomes a super mover. A recent study found that genetics accounts for about 50% of a human lifespan, and Milman said among super agers the role of genetics may be even greater. However, only 19% of super movers also qualify as super agers, suggesting there may be multiple strategies to protect the brain from aging.
The authors emphasize that lifestyle habits — including decisions about diet, sleep, stress management, and social connection — all matter. Research shows that nearly half of all dementia (搜索) cases could be prevented or delayed by addressing 14 modifiable risk factors.
"Fast walking is a marker that the brain and body are aging well," Verghese said. "But also it's possible that people who walk faster might, by engaging in these activities, also protect their brain health through a variety of mechanisms by reducing inflammation, improving cardiovascular health, and promoting brain growth in areas that are essential to maintain cognitive function as you get older."
Practical Steps Toward Becoming a Super Mover
Verghese found evidence that super movers were speedy before they reached age 80. While genetics likely play a role, getting comfortable with a brisk walking pace now makes it more likely to maintain that pace later in life.
To walk toward longevity, studies suggest a pace of around 3 miles per hour, and faster may be better. The goal should be at least 30 minutes a day, consistent with the CDC's recommended 150 to 300 minutes of moderate activity per week.
"You don't have to do the 30 minutes in one go. You can split it up. 10 minutes is better than zero minutes," Verghese said.
"One of the main messages is, you know, keep mobile," he added. "Exercise regularly and, you know, that might put you on the pathway to being a super mover as you age."
