FDA Approves Lecanemab Subcutaneous Home Injection for Alzheimer's Disease

BioArctic (搜索) and its partner Eisai announced on 24 August that Leqembi Iqlik (搜索), a subcutaneous autoinjector version of the anti-amyloid antibody lecanemab, is available in the US for initiation therapy, following FDA approval on 13 July. The companies describe it as the first anti-amyloid treatment cleared for at-home dosing both at the start of treatment and throughout maintenance.
The starting dose is 500 mg, delivered as two 250 mg injections that each take roughly 15 seconds through an autoinjector, replacing the intravenous regimen that required a clinical setting, trained staff and an hour or more per biweekly visit. Medical oversight is not eliminated: MRI monitoring remains required before treatment starts and at specified points afterward to detect ARIA (搜索), the brain swelling or bleeding associated with anti-amyloid drugs.
Leqembi is approved in 53 countries, and the subcutaneous formulation is under regulatory review in several more, including Japan and China, where a Biologics License Application was accepted in January and granted priority review the following month. Lecanemab is also being studied in the four-year AHEAD 3-45 trial with Eisai, Biogen and the Alzheimer's Clinical Trial Consortium in cognitively normal people with elevated brain amyloid, and as a backbone therapy in the Tau NexGen study of a rare inherited form of the disease.
