The US Food and Drug Administration has approved Rayner's RayOne EMV Toric intraocular lens (IOL), providing ophthalmologists with a new option for patients requiring both cataract (搜索) surgery and astigmatism (搜索) correction. The approval coincides with the 2025 American Academy of Ophthalmology annual meeting in Orlando, Florida.
Clinical Trial Results Demonstrate Superior Stability
The approval follows successful completion of a pivotal Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) study, a multicenter, randomized, active-controlled FDA trial that enrolled 238 patients. Participants received either the RayOne EMV Toric IOL (搜索) or the RayOne Aspheric control monofocal IOL.
Clinical results demonstrated exceptional rotational stability, with the toric IOL showing an absolute mean rotation of just 0.9° at days 1-2 post-operatively. By month 6, the lens maintained an absolute mean lens alignment of only 3.5°, with at least 99% of eyes rotating ≤5°—performance that exceeded FDA requirements.

Advanced Optical Design Technology
The RayOne EMV Toric represents the latest addition to Rayner's EMV IOL platform, originally launched in 2020 and now distributed to over 75 countries globally. The platform was developed in collaboration with Australian consultant ophthalmic surgeon Graham Barrett, AM, MBBCh, FRANZCO.
The lens is built on a patented non-diffractive optic design that utilizes controlled positive spherical aberration, distinguishing it from other enhanced monofocal IOLs that largely use negative spherical aberration. Unlike many IOLs that increase depth of focus through light-splitting technology, the RayOne EMV Toric spreads light along the visual axis to elongate the focal range from distance into intermediate vision with smoother transitions.
This optical design delivers high-quality vision with monofocal levels of contrast sensitivity and low dysphotopsia, while providing an increased range of focus up to 1.5 diopters with an emmetropic target.
Technical Specifications and Features
The RayOne EMV Toric is a single-piece, injectable, preloaded IOL delivered through a 2.2 mm incision. The lens is composed of a hydrophilic acrylic copolymer called Rayacryl with a refractive index of 1.46, plus a benzophenone-based ultraviolet absorbing agent.
Key technological features include anti-vaulting haptic technology for centration and stabilization, with an average offset of just 0.08 mm at 3 to 6 months post-surgery. The lens incorporates a square edge design with a 360° optimized barrier to reduce epithelial cell migration at the haptic-optic junction and minimize posterior capsular opacification (搜索).
The toric IOL is available in various spherical powers with cylinder correction options ranging from +0.75 D to +4.5 D in +0.75 D increments, designed to treat significant corneal astigmatism (搜索). The lens includes alignment markings and emphasizes rotational stability, with reported average rotation of approximately 1.83° at 3-6 months post-surgery and very low decentration.
Market Availability and Clinical Access
The RayOne EMV Toric IOL (搜索) will be displayed at the American Academy of Ophthalmology congress, where attendees can visit the Rayner booth for hands-on experience with the technology. The lens has already received CE mark approval in Europe in 2022, where clinicians have provided positive real-world feedback on its performance.
Rayner, a British ophthalmic medical product manufacturer, maintains a broad portfolio including ophthalmic viscosurgical devices, eye drops, artificial tears, and various IOL types including monofocal, trifocal, and toric options. The original RayOne EMV received FDA approval in 2021, establishing the foundation for this latest toric variant.
