Novel Approach to Psychedelic Medicine
The Kingston trial distinguishes itself from existing psychedelic research by focusing on microdoses rather than the high-dose "macrodoses" that have dominated the field. Traditional psychedelic studies typically involve doses that produce significant hallucinatory effects, requiring participants to be monitored in medical settings for up to half a day.
"They have that mystical experience and changes in their perception of their environment — what we call a trip," Soares explained. "That is not for everybody. Some people cannot tolerate that effect of psychedelics."
The microdosing approach aims to deliver therapeutic benefits without the mind-altering side effects that can make traditional psychedelic treatments unsuitable for many patients.
Study Design and Protocol
The trial will enroll up to 60 adults diagnosed with debilitating generalized anxiety disorder (搜索) but no other medical conditions. Participants will self-administer 2-3 milligrams of psilocybin daily at home for four weeks. Following this initial phase, participants will be randomly assigned to receive either continued psilocybin microdoses or a placebo for an additional four weeks.
The study's primary objective is to assess participant outcomes during the first half of the trial, then monitor for signs of anxiety recurrence or withdrawal symptoms during the second phase. The data collected will potentially inform larger Phase 3 trials, which typically represent the final testing phase before drug market approval.
Addressing Rising Anxiety Rates
The timing of this research coincides with alarming increases in generalized anxiety disorder (搜索) prevalence. According to Statistics Canada (搜索) data, rates among people aged 15 and older more than doubled from 2.6% to 5.5% between 2012 and 2022.
Current standard treatments include antidepressants and psychotherapy, but a significant subset of patients fail to respond to these conventional approaches. Dr. Tyler Kaster, a psychiatrist and medical head of the Temerty Centre for Therapeutic Brain Intervention at Toronto's Centre for Addictions and Mental Health (搜索) (CAMH), noted that exploring microdosing represents "a really interesting idea" for treatment-resistant cases.
"The whole field of psychedelics has a lot of promise. There's also a lot of enthusiasm, and we need to figure out what if any role these treatments have," Kaster stated.
Bridging Anecdotal Evidence and Clinical Research
While controlled clinical studies examining psilocybin microdosing for anxiety remain rare, anecdotal reports of self-medication have been increasingly common. "It's not that uncommon to come across someone that says, 'Oh, I've been microdosing with psilocybin and I'm feeling much better,'" Soares observed.
However, he emphasized the critical need for rigorous scientific investigation: "[But there are] very few studies looking at microdosing in medical conditions, in a controlled setting, [where] we know exactly what people are taking, for how long [and] what doses."
Therapeutic Legitimacy and Safety
Beyond generating clinical data, the research aims to advance the broader acceptance of psychedelics as legitimate medical treatments. Soares highlighted the importance of moving these substances from underground use to regulated medical practice.
"They have been used recreationally or religiously for many, many years or centuries. But they have a medicinal value, a therapeutic value, that we need to study," he explained. "Because if we don't study, it remains in the underground — and then we don't know exactly how to use them safely."
The trial represents part of a growing wave of psychedelic research across Canada, with studies investigating various compounds including psilocybin, ketamine, and LSD for different medical applications. However, the Kingston study's focus on microdosing and home-based administration could potentially offer a more accessible treatment model for anxiety disorders if proven effective and safe.
