First Proton Therapy System Arrives in Nebraska, Ending 'Proton Desert' for Central U.S. Cancer Patients

A state-of-the-art proton beam therapy system arrived at the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center (搜索) on Saturday, June 6, marking the first such installation in Nebraska and a transformative moment for cancer care across the central United States. The 67,000-pound Mevion S250-FIT (搜索) system completed a 1,400-mile journey from Boston before being lifted by crane onto the north side of the cancer center at 505 S. 45th Street in Omaha.
"Something that started 10 years ago is coming much closer to being a reality," said Charles Enke, MD, Nebraska Medicine (搜索) radiation oncologist and chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology at UNMC. "I've really had a wonderful time and opportunity in my career, but this really is kind of the cherry on top."
Addressing the 'Proton Desert'
The central United States has long been considered a "proton desert," with most proton therapy centers concentrated on the East and West coasts. Currently, there are no proton therapy facilities in Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, or Colorado, despite Denver being a large metropolitan area. Fewer than 50 centers nationwide provide this treatment.
"There are 200,000 patients in the US each year who meet accepted indications for proton therapy but can't receive this treatment because the nearest proton therapy treatment facility is too far away," Dr. Enke explained. Many patients who are recommended for proton therapy ultimately choose another option rather than uprooting their lives and moving away for treatment. "They don't get to take advantage of an option that is recommended for them. Now, we will be able to address those patients that live in a 500-mile area."
A Compact Technological Breakthrough
The Mevion S250-FIT (搜索) represents a significant engineering advancement over older proton therapy systems. "The large size of the older machines was a barrier in the past. But the Mevion S250-FIT is more than 50% smaller than traditional proton therapy systems and fits into a single treatment room instead of an entire multi-room facility," Dr. Enke noted.
Proton therapy uses charged particles to deliver radiation that stops directly at the tumor site, reducing side effects and improving quality of life compared to traditional radiation approaches. The beam's precision makes it particularly valuable for treating children with cancer, as it limits radiation dose to normal tissues more effectively than any other available technology.

Timeline to Patient Care
While the system has now arrived on campus, patients will need to wait before treatment becomes available. Dr. Enke indicated that it will likely be close to a year or slightly longer before the first patient is treated, with proton therapy expected to be available by spring of 2027. Once operational, the system will expand the scope of top-tier cancer care at the center and significantly reduce the need for patients across Nebraska and surrounding states to travel long distances for treatment.
