First UK Patient Receives NHS-Funded CAR-T Therapy for Aggressive Leukemia at Manchester Royal Infirmary

Oscar Murphy, a 28-year-old car salesman from Bury, has become the first patient in the UK to receive a groundbreaking CAR-T therapy (搜索) called obe-cel on the NHS at Manchester Royal Infirmary (MRI). Murphy was diagnosed with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (搜索) (B-cell ALL) in March 2025 and received the innovative treatment on January 2, 2026, after his aggressive blood cancer returned despite undergoing chemotherapy and a donor stem cell transplant.
"The leukaemia I've got is so fast-acting," Murphy told BBC News. "It needs an even quicker response to stop it. And we've now got an answer for that."
Clinical Breakthrough for Aggressive Blood Cancer
The obe-cel therapy represents a next-generation CAR-T treatment that reprograms a patient's own immune cells to more effectively recognize and destroy cancer cells. The personalized treatment involves collecting T cells (搜索) from the patient, genetically modifying them in a laboratory with chimeric antigen receptors (搜索) (CARs), and then infusing them back into the patient's bloodstream in two separate doses administered 10 days apart.
Dr. Eleni Tholouli, Murphy's consultant hematologist and Director of the Adult Stem Cell Transplant, CAR-T and Gene Therapy Unit at MRI, emphasized the therapy's significance. "Usually, this type of leukaemia is very aggressive and adult patients don't live beyond six to eight months. With this therapy, we are able to offer them years and potentially a cure," she said. "It's very significant and is revolutionising the way we tackle this cancer."
Promising Clinical Trial Results
The treatment's approval was based on results from the FELIX study, which treated 127 patients globally, with 24 treated at Manchester Royal Infirmary. The clinical trial data demonstrated that 77% of patients who received at least one infusion of obe-cel went into remission from their leukemia. Remarkably, half of the patients showed no signs of disease after three and a half years, and on average, the treatment provided patients with an additional 15.6 months of life.
Manchester Royal Infirmary recruited the most patients to the FELIX trial, with Dr. Tholouli playing a key role in the research and working closely with regulators. The evidence suggests that obe-cel provides more durable remissions with significantly less toxicity compared to other immunotherapies currently available.
UK Manufacturing and NHS Implementation
The therapy was developed by Autolus (搜索), a University College London (UCL) spinout company, and is now manufactured in the UK. The treatment is led by Dr. Claire Roddie, Associate Professor of Haematology at UCL, along with cancer institute scientists Martin Pule and Karl Peggs.
NHS England has agreed to fund the immunotherapy at several centers across the country, with approximately 50 NHS patients per year expected to benefit from the treatment. This marks the latest addition to the NHS's CAR-T therapy (搜索) portfolio, building on its position as the first health system in Europe to offer CAR-T treatments in 2018.
Patient Experience and Future Outlook
Murphy described the treatment as "very sci-fi" and expressed amazement at how such a small dose could be so powerful. The tiny bag containing his personalized treatment held 100 million CAR T-cells in just three teaspoons of liquid, taking only a few minutes to infuse into his bloodstream.
"It's very sci-fi, but if it means it gets rid of the cancer permanently and my own cells can do it it's just fantastic," Murphy said. He completed his second and final infusion on January 13, 2026, marking the end of his CAR-T treatment.
The success of previous trial patients provides hope for Murphy's future. Chris Williams, a 29-year-old from Belfast who was treated as a trial patient at MRI in 2023, is now in remission. "This treatment has given me a future. I've recently got engaged to my partner Chloe and I'm living a relatively normal life, bar some regular check-ups," Williams said.
Professor Peter Johnson, NHS National Clinical Director for Cancer, praised the development: "The journey of obe-cel from scientific research in a UK university to a safe, effective, and affordable treatment delivered at specialist NHS CAR-T centres is a remarkable one and will help more people like Oscar live longer and healthier lives."
