GATE 2027: IIT Madras Revises Biotechnology Syllabus, Expands Two-Paper Combinations

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has released a revised information brochure for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2027, introducing significant updates to the Biotechnology (BT) syllabus and expanding the list of permitted two-paper combinations for select engineering disciplines. The revised brochure has been uploaded to the official GATE 2027 website, and the institute has confirmed that the examination schedule, eligibility criteria, and other admission-related guidelines remain unchanged.
Biotechnology Syllabus Overhaul
The GATE 2027 Biotechnology syllabus retains its overall structure compared to GATE 2026 but expands key areas across biology and biotechnology. One of the most notable structural changes involves the merging of two previously separate sections into a single unit titled "Fundamentals of Biological Engineering." Sections dealing with material and energy balances, thermodynamics, and transport phenomena have been consolidated to create a more organized syllabus.
In the "Engineering Mathematics" section, new topics including Bayesian statistics and vector calculus have been introduced. The "General Biology" section now places increased emphasis on metabolism, immunology, and microbiology. Additionally, the modified syllabus incorporates newer topics from the field of recombinant DNA technology, such as recombination-based cloning, biosensors, and omics technologies.
Compared with GATE 2026, which was conducted by IIT Guwahati and featured seven syllabus sections, the GATE 2027 version under IIT Madras has been restructured into six sections. A major structural change involves the merger of previously separate biotechnology application and molecular tools sections, with Plant/Animal/Microbial Biotechnology now combined with Recombinant DNA Technology. The revised syllabus reflects a shift in emphasis from traditional biotechnology concepts toward modern biotechnology, omics, and molecular techniques.
Expanded Two-Paper Combinations
IIT Madras has broadened the scope of two-paper combinations to support interdisciplinary learning. Candidates opting for the Robotics and Automation (RA) paper will now have additional choices for their second paper. In addition to Computer Science and Information Technology (CS), Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DA), Electrical Engineering (EE), and Mechanical Engineering (ME), candidates can now also combine RA with Electronics and Communication Engineering (EC) and Instrumentation Engineering (IN).
Similarly, candidates appearing for Electronics and Communication Engineering (EC) can now select Robotics and Automation (RA) as their second paper, alongside the existing choices of CS, DA, EE, IN, and Physics (PH). Instrumentation Engineering (IN) candidates can now pair their paper with RA in addition to Biomedical Engineering (BM), EC, EE, and ME.
Examination Pattern and Schedule
Despite the syllabus revisions, IIT Madras has clarified that the examination format remains unchanged. GATE 2027 will feature 30 test papers conducted in English, each worth 100 marks. The examination is scheduled across multiple dates: February 6, 7, 13, 14, 20, and 21, 2027. Results are expected to be announced on March 19, 2027.
The GATE Online Application Processing System (GOAPS) opened on August 14, 2026, with regular registration closing on September 21, 2026, and extended registration available until September 30, 2026, with a late fee. Candidates are advised to consult the revised information brochure on the official GATE 2027 website before beginning their preparation to ensure alignment with the latest guidelines.
