Glaukos Corporation, a global leader in ophthalmic pharmaceuticals and medical technologies, broke ground Thursday on an $82 million research, development, and manufacturing facility in Huntsville's Cummings Research Park (搜索). The 200,000-square-foot facility represents a significant expansion for the California-based company as it advances novel therapies for chronic eye diseases.
The facility will be built on 25 acres at the corner of Mark Smith Drive and Explorer Boulevard, with the company holding an option for an additional 15 acres for future expansion. CEO Tom Burns told AL.com that the investment could ultimately reach $100 million, with potential to expand to a 400,000-square-foot facility.
Strategic Location Selection
After evaluating more than 100 potential sites worldwide, Glaukos selected Huntsville for its unique combination of scientific talent and research infrastructure. "It already attracted NASA," Burns said. "Space Command is coming, with good reason. It has the highest per capita masters and Ph.Ds. I love the scientific pedigree. I love the vibrant culture."
The decision to locate in Cummings Research Park (搜索), the second largest research park in the country, aligns with the company's focus on high-tech manufacturing and innovation. "We have the ability to expand and go even bigger from an agreement with the city," Burns noted.
Focus on Ophthalmic Innovation
The facility will house the company's prosthetic device manufacturing, including titanium tiny stents and other products for treating glaucoma (搜索), corneal disorders (搜索), and retinal diseases (搜索). Burns emphasized the high-tech nature of the operation, stating, "Really, it's high tech. You've got high-tech stuff in Cummings Research Park (搜索). This will be among the highest. It will be cool."
Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle highlighted the potential clinical impact, saying the technologies developed at the facility "will change the way we see eye disease." He added, "That work requires not only great scientists and visionary leaders, but also a community that understands how to support discovery and bring it to scale."
Employment and Economic Impact
The facility plans to initially employ more than 150 people, with an average wage requirement of $34.66 per hour, equivalent to just under $72,000 annually per job. The company has committed to a five-year ramp-up to reach full employment, with half of the workforce required to work on-site rather than remotely.
Construction is expected to be completed by 2030, with hiring and operations scaling up in tandem with the facility's development.
State and Federal Support
The groundbreaking ceremony attracted significant political support, including U.S. Representatives Dale Strong and Robert Aderholt. Strong noted that while Huntsville is known for "rockets, space and defense," the Glaukos facility demonstrates that "research, science and medicine thrive" in the city.
Ellen McNair, Secretary of the Alabama Department of Commerce (搜索), praised the investment as "a powerful endorsement of our state's skilled workforce, world-class research assets and pro-business environment." She noted that the project reflects the strength of Alabama's economic development strategic plan "Catalyst."
