Glaukos Launches First FDA-Approved Epithelium-On Corneal Cross-Linking Treatment for Keratoconus in US
核心洞察
Glaukos Corporation has commercially launched Epioxa (搜索), the first and only FDA-approved epithelium-on corneal cross-linking therapy for keratoconus (搜索) treatment in the United States.
The oxygen-enriched topical treatment offers a minimally invasive, incision-free alternative to traditional cross-linking procedures, reducing treatment duration, complexity, and pain while shortening recovery time.
The launch includes comprehensive patient access support through EpioxaCareConnect program, featuring benefits investigation, copay assistance, and specialty pharmacy services.
Glaukos Corporation has launched its corneal cross-linking treatment Epioxa (搜索) HD (riboflavin 5'-phosphate ophthalmic solution) 0.239% and Epioxa (riboflavin 5'-phosphate ophthalmic solution) 0.177% to the U.S. commercial market, marking a significant advancement in keratoconus (搜索) treatment. The launch comes less than five months after the FDA approved Epioxa for treating this progressive corneal disorder.
First-in-Class Epithelium-On Treatment
Epioxa (搜索) represents the first and only FDA-approved epithelium-on, minimally invasive corneal cross-linking therapy for keratoconus (搜索). The novel, oxygen-enriched topical therapeutic is bioactivated by ultraviolet light and designed as an incision-free alternative to traditional cross-linking procedures.
The treatment is indicated for use in epithelium-on corneal collagen (搜索) cross-linking to treat keratoconus (搜索) in adults and pediatric patients aged 13 and older. According to clinical data, Epioxa (搜索) reduces the duration, complexity, and pain of treatment while shortening recovery time compared to conventional approaches.
Both Epioxa (搜索) and Epioxa HD are available as single-dose syringes administered via topical ophthalmic application. The oxygen-enriched formulation eliminates the need for epithelium removal, a painful step required in traditional cross-linking procedures.
Clinical Significance and Expert Perspectives
Dr. Eric D. Donnenfeld emphasized the clinical importance of the oxygen-enriched environment provided by Epioxa (搜索), stating: "An oxygen-enriched environment (such as the one provided by Epioxa) is critical to the success of CXL... as corneal surgeons, we have an obligation to our patients to preserve vision, improve quality of life, and to avoid corneal transplantation in these young patients."
He added: "The introduction of Epioxa (搜索) is an important step forward towards this important goal."
Comprehensive Patient Access Program
Coinciding with the commercial launch, Glaukos introduced EpioxaCareConnect, a comprehensive patient access support program designed to facilitate treatment access through multiple services:
Access and Reimbursement Services
The program provides benefits investigation, prior authorization requirements, estimated patient out-of-pocket costs, and determines financial assistance eligibility.
Financial Assistance Options
Two financial assistance programs are available:
- Epioxa Copay Program for insured patients to minimize out-of-pocket costs for both Epioxa and the cross-linking procedure
- Patient Assistance Program for eligible U.S. residents, both uninsured and underinsured
Specialty Pharmacy Support
Clinical practices can send specialty pharmacy prescriptions directly to EpioxaCareConnect. When a payer allows Epioxa (搜索) access via specialty pharmacy, the program works directly with the pharmacy to fill prescriptions and provide financial assistance.
Patient Access Liaison Support
Each enrolled patient is paired with a patient access liaison member who provides one-on-one, non-medical support by answering logistical questions, guiding patients through insurance and access processes, and ensuring smooth treatment initiation. Support continues following first-eye treatment and coordinates second-eye treatment when needed.
Healthcare Provider Resources
Eyecare providers can access comprehensive resources through Epioxa (搜索)'s official website for healthcare professionals, including the EpioxaCareConnect patient enrollment form, billing and coding tools to support access and appropriate reimbursement, and patient-friendly education materials covering coverage, insurance processes, and financial assistance options.
Addressing Keratoconus Underdiagnosis
Glaukos announced plans to substantially increase investments in patient awareness, education, and access to address underdiagnosis and undertreatment of keratoconus (搜索). These initiatives will include streamlined patient access support programs, disease awareness campaigns, and detection programs.
The treatment can be ordered directly from Glaukos or through its specialty pharmaceutical distribution network, making it readily available to healthcare providers treating keratoconus (搜索) patients across the United States.
