Dr. Daniel Osei Ofosu, Senior Research Scientist at the Biotechnology and Nuclear Agriculture Research Institute of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (搜索), emphasized that Songotra T's introduction would reshape the cowpea farming landscape, offering benefits from the field to the consumer.
Traditionally, cowpea (搜索) farmers in Ghana have relied on extensive pesticide spraying to protect their crops from Maruca pod borer (搜索) infestations. These farmers often apply chemicals as many as eight times during the plant's short eight-week growth period. Despite these efforts, many farmers still face severe crop losses, leading to high cowpea prices, sometimes exceeding GH₵3,000 for a 50kg bag. Songotra T (搜索) offers a sustainable alternative by reducing the need for frequent pesticide applications, thereby lowering input costs and minimizing environmental impact.
Professor Marian Quain, Deputy Director-General and Chief Scientist at CSIR, has advocated for increased institutional awareness and public engagement to promote the adoption of biotechnology innovations. She highlighted the importance of showcasing research and innovations to the public to foster understanding and acceptance. "It is paramount that we are aware of what is happening in our backyard. Seeing believes and it helps us tell our story," she stated, emphasizing the need for open house events and community engagement to address concerns and highlight the benefits of biotechnology.
Following biosafety approval, Songotra T (搜索) underwent extensive field trials across key cowpea (搜索)-growing regions in northern Ghana to ensure its suitability and performance in local farming conditions. Nana Akua Yeboah, Principal Regulatory Officer at the Food and Drugs Authority (搜索), assured the public that the Songotra T cowpea variety has passed a thorough biosafety review and risk assessment, and has been approved by the National Biosafety Authority as safe for both food and animal feed.
The introduction of Songotra T (搜索) positions Ghana as the second African country, after Nigeria, to make this pest-resistant cowpea (搜索) variety available. CSIR anticipates that Songotra T will deliver substantial economic benefits to both farmers and consumers, with the potential to stabilize or even reduce the cost of beans in Ghana.
