Engitix Ltd. (搜索), a biotechnology company pioneering extracellular matrix (ECM)-driven drug discovery, has entered into a strategic research collaboration and option agreement with GSK to identify and validate novel therapeutic targets driving liver fibrosis (搜索) regression. Announced on June 8, 2026, the alliance aims to address a critical gap in fibrosis drug discovery by focusing on mechanisms of liver fibrosis regression, rather than progression, enabling the discovery of high-confidence, functionally validated targets grounded in human disease biology.
Under the terms of the agreement, Engitix is eligible to receive up to £44.5 million in upfront and near-term payments, as well as up to £118 million per target in downstream milestone payments, in addition to tiered low-single digit royalties on future product sales. GSK will have the option to license assays, datasets, and targets arising from the collaboration, and will lead any further research, development, and commercialization activities on targets discovered and validated through the partnership.
A Human-Centric Approach to Fibrosis
The collaboration leverages Engitix's proprietary human ECM Platform alongside deeply phenotyped multi-omics datasets. Engitix's approach is built on the premise that the extracellular matrix is not merely passive structural support but an active driver of disease in fibrosis and solid tumors. The company works from human patient tissue, stripping it down to the acellular ECM scaffold before employing proteomics, imaging, bioinformatics, and other readouts to compare diseased and healthy tissue environments. This methodology, according to Engitix, enables the identification of disease-relevant targets and biomarkers with stronger translational potential.
Engitix will develop human ECM-based disease models and generate high-resolution translational multi-omics datasets to uncover novel targets associated with fibrosis resolution in liver disease. GSK will then have the option to license these assays, datasets, and targets for further development.

Engitix's Growing Momentum
The GSK agreement comes only months after Engitix closed a US$25 million Series A extension led by Netherton Investments (搜索), which invests on behalf of billionaire hedge fund founder Mike Platt. The financing was intended to advance Engitix's preclinical pipeline in solid tumors and fibrosis while expanding its proprietary ECM datasets.
Engitix currently has three disclosed preclinical programs: EGTX003 in fibrosis, EGTX004 in solid tumors, and EGTX006 in advanced fibrosis. The company also maintains two confidential collaborative programs with Takeda (搜索) in advanced metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) (搜索) fibrosis and fibrostenotic Crohn's disease (搜索).
The Liver Fibrosis (搜索) Landscape
Liver fibrosis (搜索), particularly in MASH, has attracted significant pharmaceutical interest after years in which the field lacked approved therapies. Madrigal (搜索)'s Rezdiffra became the first FDA-approved treatment for MASH with moderate-to-advanced fibrosis in 2024, while Novo Nordisk's semaglutide has since expanded the therapeutic landscape by showing MASH resolution and fibrosis improvement in clinical testing.
The Engitix deal also echoes GSK's broader strategy in fibrosis. In December 2024, GSK entered a deal worth US$45 million, including a US$15 million equity investment, with London-based Relation Therapeutics (搜索) to discover and develop treatments for osteoarthritis and fibrotic diseases using human genetics, patient tissue, and machine-learning platforms. Like the Engitix collaboration, that agreement gives GSK access to a discovery engine built around human disease biology rather than conventional preclinical models, with payments structured around upfront, near-term, and milestone-based economics.
