The detection, which currently appears to be a single case, comes less than a month after H5N1 reached Australia, where it has since been confirmed in wild seabirds across Western Australia, South Australia, and New South Wales.
The arrival of H5N1 in both countries marks a new chapter in the virus's expansion, which has already caused what the World Organisation for Animal Health describes as "unprecedented levels of ongoing outbreaks" worldwide. Since January 2024, approximately 140 million farmed birds have died or been culled globally due to the H5 variant.
Australia's Experience Offers a Preview
Australia's recent encounters with H5N1 provide an important indication of what New Zealand may face. The virus was first detected in a brown skua in Western Australia, with further detections following in migratory seabirds. More recently, H5N1 was confirmed in a greater crested tern in South Australia, marking the first detection in a resident Australian seabird and therefore a possible indication of local transmission.
So far, Australian detections have involved individual seabirds rather than widespread wildlife mortality, and the virus has not been detected in poultry. However, susceptibility to infection and severe disease varies between species, and the risk of transmission is likely greatest in populations that live in large, high-density colonies. These colonies can serve as a source of transmission to other species inhabiting the same environments, including shorebirds and marine mammals such as seals and sea lions.
Economic Stakes for the Poultry Industry
The potential spread to commercial poultry flocks carries significant economic implications. Western Australia's Chamber of Commerce and Industry has warned that if the virus were to reach commercial flocks, egg prices could exceed $10 a carton. Will Golsby, the industry group's chief executive, called for governments to prepare an industry support package in the event culling was required.
"An outbreak would likely require a farm to be closed for several months," Golsby said. "Farmers would then need to source new chickens, grow them to productive size and navigate re-entry to markets and supply chain."
The poultry industry contributes more than $10 billion to the Australian national economy, employs thousands of workers, and produces half of the animal protein eaten in the country. Australia successfully contained and eradicated high pathogenicity H7 bird flu (搜索) outbreaks in 2024 and 2025, though that response resulted in the destruction of about 2 million chickens, the loss of approximately 7% of Australia's egg layer flock, and a jump in egg prices. One poultry farmer reported losing more than 500,000 birds and millions in revenue.
In the United States, the spread and control of the H5 virus was linked to a 220% increase in egg prices in early 2025.
New Zealand's Preparedness and Response
New Zealand has spent recent years strengthening surveillance programs, diagnostic capacity, and collaboration between wildlife, agricultural, and public health agencies. The immediate focus is on determining the scale and distribution of infection through increased surveillance around the initial detection, testing potentially affected wildlife, and rapidly sharing information between laboratories, wildlife managers, veterinarians, public health authorities, and affected communities.
The Department of Conservation (搜索) has trialed a vaccine developed for poultry on five critically endangered taonga species: takahē, kākāpō, black stilts, shore plovers, and red-crowned kākāriki. The vaccine has proven safe and results in an immune response that is likely to be protective. The Ministry for Primary Industries (搜索) has approved the vaccine for use in these species, and rollout is now underway on a larger scale. However, the vaccine requires two doses and can only be practically implemented in captive, managed populations or on offshore islands.
The devastating impact of the virus on marine mammals globally, including northern and southern elephant seals, highlights the vulnerability of New Zealand's seal and sea lion populations, including the pakake/New Zealand sea lion. In the US, trials of a bird flu vaccine formulated for cattle have been conducted in the endangered Hawaiian monk seal, though practical application in marine mammals in New Zealand remains a distant prospect.
Biosecurity and the Stamping Out Strategy
Dr. Robyn Alders, a veterinarian and honorary professor with the Australian National University, noted that an added challenge with the current H5N1 variant is the wider range of species that can carry the virus, including a broader variety of wild birds and mammals, and potentially feral, pest, or domestic animals. The recent H7 bird flu (搜索) outbreaks were attributed to wild ducks.
"For many years now, in some of the large poultry producing countries in Europe, during the migratory season, the governments will encourage producers to keep their flocks indoors, in sheds," Alders said.
Australia's largest poultry producer, the Ingham's Group (搜索), announced a "complete lockdown" in Western Australia following confirmation of the first positive case, with the company seeking an exemption to allow free-range chickens to be kept indoors. Egg producers in South Australia have been taking precautions including restricting unnecessary visitors, disinfecting vehicles, equipment and footwear, educating staff, and closely monitoring their flocks.
Australia's Ausvet plan details all aspects of the "stamping out" strategy, from potential infection pathways, testing, quarantine and movement controls, to approved methods for culling and disposal. Under the plan, the default approach is to contain and eradicate the disease while minimizing public health, animal welfare, environmental, and economic impacts. Acceptable methods for culling include the use of carbon dioxide gas and water-based expansion foam, though the RSPCA has called for fast-tracked research into more humane methods such as nitrogen-based approaches.
Looking Forward
Genomic sequencing will be particularly important for New Zealand, helping to identify where the virus likely originated, whether the country has experienced one or several introductions, and whether transmission is occurring locally. It may also help link detections in New Zealand with outbreaks in Australia or elsewhere along regional bird-migration routes.
The arrival of H5N1 is unlikely to be the end of the story. International experience suggests further incursions may occur as migratory birds continue to move through the region. The challenge therefore shifts from trying to prevent the virus from arriving to detecting new incursions quickly and managing their consequences. The coming weeks will be important in establishing whether this is an isolated detection or the first sign of wider circulation.
