Hims & Hers Health (搜索) has acquired Canadian telehealth platform Livewell (搜索) to enter the Canadian market, timing its launch with anticipated generic semaglutide availability.
The expansion targets Canada's obesity crisis, where nearly two-thirds of adults are overweight or living with obesity.
Novo Nordisk lost Canadian patent protection on Ozempic and Wegovy after failing to pay a $250 maintenance fee, creating market opportunity for generic alternatives.
Hims & Hers Health (搜索), Inc. has officially entered the Canadian healthcare market through its acquisition of Livewell (搜索), an online telehealth platform focused on weight loss, positioning itself to capitalize on the anticipated launch of generic semaglutide following Novo Nordisk's patent expiration.
The U.S.-based telehealth company's strategic move is timed to align with what it describes as "the first anticipated availability of generic semaglutide anywhere in the world." Semaglutide, popularized by the brand Ozempic and primarily used in treating type 2 diabetes, has gained widespread use as an anti-obesity medication.
Market Opportunity Emerges from Patent Lapse
The expansion opportunity arose after Danish pharmaceutical giant Novo Nordisk lost Canadian patent protection on its semaglutide-based drugs Ozempic and Wegovy. According to the Canadian Patent Database, the patent, first issued in 2013, is now "expired and beyond the period of reversal." A report by Science indicated that Novo Nordisk last paid the annual maintenance fee in 2018, when it was $250.
This patent lapse creates a significant market opening in Canada, while Novo Nordisk will maintain patent protection in the United States until at least 2032.
Addressing Canada's Obesity Crisis
"Our expansion into Canada is a direct response to critical public health needs, particularly around the obesity crisis," said Andrew Dudum, co-founder and chief executive of Hims & Hers, in a press release.
The company highlighted that nearly two-thirds of adults in Canada are overweight or living with obesity, representing a substantial patient population for weight management interventions. Currently, branded semaglutide with no surrounding clinical support costs more than $200 per month in Canada.
Leadership and Operations Structure
Hims & Hers is establishing a dedicated Canadian team to manage local operations. Austin Kouri, a former DoorDash executive, will serve as general manager of Hims & Hers Canada, working alongside advisor and newly appointed chief medical officer Dr. Sandy Van, an obesity physician.
Livewell (搜索) co-founders Antoine Arbour and Patrick Duffy will join the Canadian leadership team following the acquisition. "Joining Hims & Hers represents a vital step forward, allowing us to be a part of the global movement to democratize access to essential care," said Arbour.
Cost Reduction Strategy
The company announced in July that generic semaglutide pricing is expected to offer significant discounts compared to branded versions, with costs projected to decrease further over time. However, no generic version of semaglutide has yet received Health Canada approval.
"Bringing Hims & Hers to Canada is a powerful investment in the health and wellness of Canadians," said Kouri, emphasizing the potential impact of increased access to weight management treatments.
The official platform launch in Canada is planned for next year, pending regulatory approvals and generic drug availability.
