Breakthrough in Stroke Prevention: The C-Guardians Two Trial

At the forefront of medical innovation, the TriHealth Heart and Vascular Institute is conducting clinical trials on a groundbreaking device designed to prevent strokes. This tiny stent, placed in the neck by vascular surgeons, could revolutionize the treatment of carotid artery disease, a condition that significantly increases the risk of stroke.

How It Works

The device, part of the C-Guardians Two trial, is inserted through a small incision at the base of the neck. Its unique micromesh lining plays a crucial role in preventing pieces from breaking off and traveling to the brain, thereby reducing the risk of stroke. Dr. Patrick Muck, a leading surgeon at TriHealth, explains, "We make a small incision at the base of the neck, put a stent in, and when you do that, we have flow diverted away from the brain so no pieces can break off and go to the brain and cause a stroke."

Patient Experience

Tony DeRose, one of the first patients to undergo this procedure, shares his journey. Diagnosed with carotid artery disease four years ago, DeRose initially underwent a procedure to clean out the artery in his neck. However, when the other side became blocked, he became a candidate for this innovative treatment. His wife, Sandi DeRose, notes the significant improvement in his condition, stating, "Now that's better, we can go for a walk, or we can go to the mall, you know we can do things now which we couldn't before."

Looking Ahead

Dr. Matthew Recht, another member of the TriHealth team, highlights the importance of having multiple treatment options available. "The nice thing is that there's multiple ways to treat the same problem, and they both seem to be equivalent as far as risk," he said. As the trial progresses, Tony DeRose and other participants will be monitored long-term to assess the stent's effectiveness and safety, potentially paving the way for it to become a new standard of care in stroke prevention.
