Swiss biotechnology company InSphero AG (搜索) has acquired PhenoVista Biosciences (搜索), Inc., a San Diego-based contract research organization specializing in high-content imaging and phenotypic assay technologies. The strategic acquisition positions InSphero to deliver more comprehensive drug discovery and toxicology testing solutions by combining 3D microtissue platforms with advanced imaging capabilities.
Strategic Combination of Complementary Technologies
The acquisition integrates PhenoVista's expertise in high-content imaging, cell painting, and phenotypic analysis with InSphero's globally recognized 3D microtissue platforms and AkuraFlow (搜索)™ microphysiological systems. This combination creates integrated workflows that pair advanced 3D biology with high-content imaging and AI-enabled data analytics to generate richer and more predictive datasets earlier in the drug discovery process.
Founded in 2009 as an ETH Zurich (搜索) spin-off, InSphero develops spheroid-based models—clusters of cells grown in three dimensions to mimic human tissue more closely than flat cell cultures. These models are designed to produce more reliable data and reduce reliance on animal testing. PhenoVista, established in 2014, has built a strong reputation for delivering high-quality, image-based assay development and screening solutions to pharmaceutical and biotechnology customers.
Expanding Therapeutic Applications
The combined organization expects to create substantial opportunities across key therapeutic and translational research areas including oncology (搜索), fibrosis (搜索), neuroscience (搜索), and safety assessment. PhenoVista's work in high-content imaging, cell painting and functional cellular analysis is expected to strengthen applications in neuroscience and neurotoxicity testing, alongside the existing focus areas.

Through the integration, PhenoVista gains access to broader global commercial infrastructure, complementary biological platforms, and expanded operational capabilities.

The acquisition comes at a time of accelerating momentum behind New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) in the United States.
