IQVIA Holdings (搜索) Inc. (NYSE: IQV) announced it has entered into an agreement to acquire certain discovery services assets from Charles River Laboratories, marking a significant expansion of the company's drug discovery capabilities. The transaction, expected to close in the second quarter, includes five sites specializing in in vitro drug discovery services and a small molecule AI platform designed to accelerate discovery programs.
Comprehensive Discovery Platform Integration
The acquired assets feature established laboratory-based New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) and are underpinned by more than 20 years of curated scientific and operational data, along with extensive therapeutic expertise. Since their inception, these assets have enabled over 100 molecules to enter clinical trials and include several commercially approved drugs.
The acquisition complements IQVIA Laboratories (搜索)' existing drug discovery capabilities to create a fully integrated, end-to-end drug discovery platform spanning target identification, hit-to-lead, lead optimization and early safety assessment. This expanded platform will broaden IQVIA's ability to serve a wider range of drug modalities and therapeutic areas in early discovery research, including Oncology (搜索), Neurology (搜索), Immunology (搜索), Metabolism (搜索) and Rare Diseases (搜索).
Strategic Value for Pharmaceutical Partners
"This acquisition will meaningfully strengthen our ability to support clients earlier in the R&D lifecycle and complements our existing translational and clinical development capabilities," said David Morris, president of IQVIA Laboratories (搜索). "Integrating these assets with our existing capabilities creates an industry-leading drug discovery platform with a track record of advancing discovery programs into clinical development."
Pharmaceutical and biotech sponsors will benefit from the integration of IQVIA's combined scientific, regulatory and clinical expertise from early-stage discovery research through to clinical development. The deal positions IQVIA as a more central partner across discovery programs for both small and large clients, from target identification through to later stage development support.
Non-Animal Research Focus
The acquisition aligns with the industry's broader push toward more ethical and potentially more scalable non-animal research approaches. The assets include established New Approach Methodologies that support growing demand for non-animal research methods, reflecting the life sciences sector's commitment to alternative testing strategies.
For investors, the move connects directly to IQVIA's role as a data-driven partner for biopharma and healthcare clients, adding wet lab discovery services and AI tools positioned closer to the earliest stages of R&D. The company is expanding into an area where many drug developers are seeking more integrated external support, potentially making IQVIA more relevant at the earliest stages of drug R&D for existing and new clients.
