IU-Led Coalition Secures NSF IMPACT Engine Designation to Accelerate Musculoskeletal Innovation

An Indiana University-led coalition has been selected for the NSF Regional Innovation Engines program, receiving $15 million over two years with potential for up to $160 million in sustained federal funding.

Nearly half of all Americans suffer from a chronic musculoskeletal disorder, underscoring the significant clinical need the initiative addresses.
Indiana University has secured a major federal designation that positions the state at the forefront of musculoskeletal research and innovation. The IU-led NSF IMPACT Engine in Indiana has been selected for the second cohort of the National Science Foundation's Regional Innovation Engines program, a highly competitive initiative designed to accelerate the translation of laboratory discoveries into market-ready solutions while driving economic growth, job creation, and talent development.
The coordinated regional ecosystem will receive $15 million over two years, with the potential to eventually receive up to $160 million from NSF if progress is achieved on well-defined milestones. An additional $179 million in partner funding will help translate cutting-edge research into patient- and consumer-focused solutions.

"Indiana is simply unrivaled in the strengths needed to quickly turn musculoskeletal breakthroughs into new technologies, new companies and high-quality jobs. And most importantly, that means these new, innovative treatments will reach the patients who need them most."
Addressing a Pervasive Health Burden
The initiative targets a pressing public health challenge: nearly half of all Americans suffer from a chronic musculoskeletal disorder, according to the United States Bone and Joint Initiative. Conditions such as arthritis (搜索), osteoporosis (搜索), bone fractures, and traumatic injuries represent a substantial burden on patients, healthcare systems, and the economy. The NSF IMPACT Engine aims to connect Indiana's world-class orthopedic industry, top universities, and health data resources to speed life-changing musculoskeletal innovations to the market.
The engine builds on the work of the Indiana Musculoskeletal Health Partnership for the Advancement of Care & Treatment (IMPACT), which has already convened more than 170 collaborators statewide to connect the people and infrastructure needed to commercialize hard tech and clinical tools that improve patients' and consumers' movement, function, and quality of life.
A Consortium of Industry and Academic Leaders
The NSF IMPACT Engine brings together a formidable coalition of partners, including Eli Lilly, Zimmer Biomet, BioCrossroads, OrthoWorx, IU Health, Regenstrief Institute, Purdue University, and the University of Notre Dame. By connecting engineers, scientists, clinicians, and industry, the initiative will build critical infrastructure to support high-impact discoveries, including development of what aims to be the world's largest integrated musculoskeletal dataset.

"The NSF IMPACT Engine in Indiana will advance U.S. leadership in biotechnology by connecting world-class resources across Indiana to speed life-changing musculoskeletal innovations to market, resulting in new therapies, smarter implants and quicker patient diagnostics."
Leadership and Operational Structure
The principal investigator for the NSF IMPACT Engine in Indiana is Melissa Kacena, a nationally recognized leader in bone research and director of the IU School of Medicine's Indiana Center for Musculoskeletal Health. Jim Lancaster, a former executive of Zimmer Biomet and thought leader in orthopedic innovation, serves as interim CEO of the engine. Amrou Awaysheh of the IU Kelley School of Business serves as the chief technology and innovation officer, and Jill Fehrenbacher of the IU School of Medicine serves as the chief learning officer. Awaysheh and Fehrenbacher are also co-principal investigators.
"Sustained federal support will allow us to invest in these existing strengths, moving discoveries into practice faster and supercharging an already vital sector of Indiana's economy," Kacena said.
The NSF IMPACT Engine in Indiana will be headquartered in the IU Launch Accelerator for Biosciences building, known as IU LAB, a five-story, 150,000-square-foot facility in the 16 Tech Innovation District expected to open in 2027.
Workforce Development and Economic Ambitions
Indiana is already one of the central manufacturing and innovation hubs for orthopedic devices worldwide. The NSF IMPACT Engine will ensure that this industry's growth is matched with increased workforce capacity through focused efforts to train students, upskill workers, and align K-12 and higher education with industry needs. The coalition aspires to train over 1,900 workers, launch over 85 startups, bring at least 30 innovations to market, and deliver more than $535 million in economic impact to the state.
The designation was established through the bipartisan CHIPS and Science Act of 2022, co-sponsored by U.S. Sen. Todd Young of Indiana. "Indiana already leads the world in orthopedic manufacturing, and this designation builds on that foundation to cement our leadership in musculoskeletal innovation," Young said. "Through the CHIPS and Science Act, we made a deliberate investment in places like Indiana, where research excellence, industry strength and talent come together to compete globally."
Complementary Industry Partnerships
The NSF designation comes amid a broader push by Indiana University to deepen ties with the orthopedic and life sciences industries. In a separate but related development, IU and Zimmer Biomet announced a three-year partnership aimed at hastening research and technology in orthopedics. That agreement involves collaboration on research and development, workforce training, and credentialing, with both parties sharing personnel, information, and technology to address conditions such as arthritis (搜索), osteoporosis (搜索), and other musculoskeletal disorders and injuries. The Zimmer Biomet partnership marks the third all-services agreement for IU in the last year, following partnerships with Cook Medical and Eli Lilly.
