King Abdullah International Medical Research Center (KAIMRC), Saudi Arabia's largest medical research institution, has partnered with Cambridge-based Flagship Pioneering (搜索) to establish a clinical trial framework for novel genetic disease therapies. The strategic collaboration, announced at the U.S.-Saudi Investment Forum in Washington, D.C., represents a significant expansion of clinical research capabilities in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Clinical Trial Framework and Investment
Under the Memorandum of Understanding, the partnership will initially focus on three Phase 1 programs and one Phase 2 program from three Flagship-founded companies targeting genetic diseases (搜索). The collaboration is designed to enable global Phase 1 and 2 clinical trials of medicines addressing genetic diseases with high unmet medical need, particularly those of significant relevance to patients in Saudi Arabia.
Saudi investors will collectively commit an initial investment of $70 million (approximately SAR 262.5 million) to the participating U.S.-based companies. The partnership framework allows for potential expansion to additional programs over time.
Infrastructure and Capabilities
The collaboration will leverage state-of-the-art facilities across multiple Saudi institutions, including KAIMRC, the Ministry of National Guard Health Affairs (搜索) (MNGHA), and King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences (KSAU-HS). Flagship companies will gain access to advanced patient care units and clinical laboratories within this integrated healthcare ecosystem.
KAIMRC brings significant research infrastructure to the partnership, including an ISO-accredited Saudi Biobank with more than 60,000 samples and a Cellular and Molecular Biobank operating under Good Manufacturing Practice standards for CAR-T cell therapy. The center maintains over 100 global partnerships and earned accreditation from the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs in 2023.
