Health authorities in Kerala's Kozhikode district are deploying a multi-pronged therapeutic strategy against Nipah virus (搜索) infection as the sole confirmed patient remains in critical condition on ventilator support at Kozhikode Government Medical College Hospital (搜索). The 43-year-old man has received the first dose of monoclonal antibody (搜索) therapy in accordance with ICMR guidelines, alongside antiviral treatment with Ribavirin initiated upon his admission on June 10.
Health Minister K Muraleedharan confirmed that the monoclonal antibody (搜索) was administered on June 12 following a recommendation from the medical board. In a further escalation of treatment, the Health Department procured Remdesivir from Bahrain after the drug was reportedly unavailable in domestic stock. The emergency arrangement was facilitated through the intervention of Additional Chief Secretary Renu, and the patient received the first dose on Sunday.
"No new Nipah cases have been reported in the district so far," Muraleedharan stated, offering cautious reassurance amid intensified containment measures.
Surveillance and Contact Tracing Expand
The contact list has grown to 100 individuals under monitoring, including 44 healthcare workers who had exposure to the patient. Of these contacts, four are categorized as high-risk and 82 as low-risk. All contacts are being monitored through twice-daily calls from the control room.
Health officials reported that tests conducted on 11 people who developed symptoms while under observation have all returned negative. In total, 30 samples have been tested, with 29 returning negative results. The only positive sample remains that of the index patient. Authorities emphasized there is currently no evidence of community transmission linked to the case.
Field surveillance teams conducted a door-to-door survey covering 320 households and 1,047 residents in the affected area of Ramanattukara Municipality. The screening found no individuals exhibiting Nipah-related symptoms. An earlier survey of 286 houses in Ward 5 of the municipality had identified 12 persons with fever, but none showed symptoms associated with Nipah infection.
A meeting of the Rapid Response Team was held in Ramanattukara municipality to review ongoing containment activities. Local self-government institutions have been tasked with ensuring that people under observation receive food and essential supplies at home, reducing the need for movement during the monitoring period.
Expert Assessment and Political Scrutiny
Experts from the National Centre for Disease Control (搜索) (NCDC) are scheduled to visit Kozhikode on Saturday to assess the situation and review containment measures. The visit comes as the state balances its Nipah response with political pressure over resource availability.
Leader of Opposition Pinarayi Vijayan alleged that hospital authorities indicated a shortage of essential medicines while the Nipah patient was undergoing treatment. He claimed that hospital authorities were unable to specify exactly when medicines would reach the facility, calling the situation "a matter of serious concern." Vijayan urged the state government to intervene immediately to ensure availability of life-saving drugs.
Muraleedharan had previously stated there was no shortage of medicines required for treatment and containment measures, noting that one imported medicine was available in Chennai and would be brought to Kozhikode soon. Responding to criticism over not visiting Kozhikode in person, the minister said the absence of wider Nipah transmission and the need for inter-departmental coordination made Thiruvananthapuram a more effective base for overseeing response measures.
Concurrent Shigella (搜索) Outbreak
Alongside the Nipah response, Kerala's Health Department is grappling with a significant rise in Shigella (搜索) infections. Since January, the state has reported 135 confirmed Shigella cases and 3 deaths, with two of the fatalities occurring in Kozhikode district. Four children are currently undergoing treatment in intensive care units, with the condition of two reported to be serious.
Kozhikode has recorded the highest burden with 68 cases, followed by Wayanad (16), Thiruvananthapuram (14), Malappuram (13), and smaller clusters across other districts. To contain the outbreak, the government has been running the 'Stop Diarrhoea' campaign since the beginning of June, with district authorities instructed to intensify chlorination of water sources, inspect wells in educational institutions, and tighten food safety checks at hotels and eateries.
