AACR 2026 represents a critical milestone for several Korean biotechnology firms, as the conference ranks among the world's three major cancer conferences alongside the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO). Unlike ASCO and ESMO, which focus on late-stage clinical results from Phase 2-3 trials, AACR characteristically features more data presentations from early-stage drug research.
Breakthrough CAR-T Therapy for Solid Tumors
Verismo Therapeutics (搜索), a U.S. subsidiary of HLB Innovation (搜索), has drawn significant attention after being selected for a Clinical Trials Plenary (CTPL) oral presentation. The company will disclose interim Phase 1 results for its chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR-T) therapy SynKIR-110 on April 20, marking the first disclosure of actual clinical data for this innovative treatment.
SynKIR-110 represents a potential breakthrough in cancer immunotherapy as it targets solid tumors, a significant departure from all currently approved CAR-T therapies which treat blood cancers. The therapy was developed using Verismo's proprietary KIR (搜索)-CAR platform technology, designed to address T-cell exhaustion caused by excessive T-cell activation, a known limitation of existing CAR-T treatments.
"The tumor microenvironment (TME) surrounding solid tumors and penetration into tumor interiors have been cited as challenges in solid tumor CAR-T development," according to industry analysis. Verismo overcame these obstacles by applying a "multi-chain" killer immunoglobulin-like receptor (KIR (搜索))-based platform technology that separates antigen recognition from activation signals.
Han Seung-yeon, a researcher at NH Investment & Securities, noted that "this AACR will be the first test to validate Verismo's KIR (搜索) platform through SynKIR-110 clinical results." She emphasized that safety data will be the most important factor to monitor, as high binding affinity necessary for tumor microenvironment activity could increase toxicity potential compared to blood cancer CAR-T therapies.
Novel Gene Therapy Targeting Hepatocellular Carcinoma
Algenomics (搜索) has also secured an oral presentation slot and will present Phase 1b/2a results for its gene therapy RZ-001 targeting hepatocellular carcinoma. The therapy represents a novel approach by targeting telomerase messenger RNA (mRNA), which is expressed in more than 80% of all cancer cell types, to induce cancer cell death, immune cell infiltration, and improved immunotherapy response rates.
Kim Seung-min, a researcher at Mirae Asset Securities, highlighted the significance of this data: "The current first-line standard combination therapy of atezolizumab and bevacizumab has an objective response rate (ORR) of only 27-30%, so whether RZ-001 can record a superior ORR will be the key factor." He added that this data could serve as an important milestone in assessing the validity of RNA-modifying enzyme technology as a new therapeutic modality.
HLB Group's Targeted Cancer Drug Portfolio
HLB Group (搜索) will present comprehensive data on its cancer pipeline, including analysis from Elevar Therapeutics (搜索) comparing the FGFR2 (搜索) selectivity of rilapugratnib (搜索) against existing pan-FGFR inhibitors. Rilapugratnib previously demonstrated efficacy and safety through global Phase 2 clinical data at the ASCO Gastrointestinal Cancers Symposium (ASCO GI 2026) in January, showing potential as a best-in-class therapy.
The drug received Breakthrough Therapy Designation in 2023, and based on Phase 2 results, the company completed its application to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in January. HLB expects the additional AACR analysis will serve as evidence highlighting rilapugratnib (搜索)'s differentiation in the commercialization process.
